Photo instructions for how to start a cutlery holder

Round 1

1. Start by making a chain.

2. Next you have to join the chain to its beginning. Make sure it is not twisted and then insert your hook in the first chain of the long chain.

3. Yarn over and pull the yarn through to make a slip stitch.

4. Then chain one. It does not count as a stitch.

5. Next make a single crochet in the next stitch in the back of the chain.

6. Keep making single crochets until the end of the round. When you will get close to the end, it might seem that the chain is twisted, but as you are working in the back of the chain, this is fine.

7. Start making the last single crochet of this round, but stop when you have two loops on your hook. It is also a good idea to count stitches at this point.

8. In this example, the first stitch in the second round should be white. So, take your white yarn and yarn over.

9. Pull the white yarn through both loops on your hook. Now the white yarn is ready to be used.

Round 2

10. Then insert your hook in the top of the first single crochet of the first round grabbing just the back loop. The green yarn should be in front of your hook.

11. Yarn over the white yarn.

12. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook. Then yarn under.

13. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. You have just made a modified single crochet. Remember to put a marker in the first stitch of the round and continue following the color chart.

2. Now you will work in the back of the chain (in the third loop of the chain which is behind “v”).

3. So, insert your hook in the back of the chain and yarn over.

4. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

5. Pull the first loop through the second one. Now you have one loop on your hook. You have just made the first slip stitch.

6. Make another slip stitch in the back of the next stitch.

7. In the photo you can see that after several stitches it starts looking like two chains stuck together. Continue making slip stitches in the third loop of the chain until the end of the row. Fasten off.

The first round where you start making the holes

1. To make the holes, follow a written pattern for a particular item item. In this example, first make a modified single crochet.

2. Then chain two (the yarn that you are not working with stays aside).

3. Skip two stitches and make two modified single crochets in the next two stitches (carry the yarn that you are not working with). Notice that the green yarn is hanging in the hole. That is fine.

4. Then repeat it: chain two, skip two stitches and make two modified single crochets in the next two stitches.

5. Work in the same way until the end of the round. The round will end with a modified single crochet.

The second round

6. Start the next round with one modified single crochet.

7. Next you will have to make a modified single crochet in the chain two space of the previous round. So, insert your hook in the chain two space grabbing both green yarns like it is shown in the picture.

8. Then yarn over the white yarn.

9. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

10. Yarn under.

11. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. You have just made a modified single crochet in the chain two space. Notice that now both green yarns are wrapped around with the white yarn.

12. Make the second modified single crochet in the same chain two space.

13. Next make two modified single crochets in the next two stitches.

14. Then repeat: make two modified single crochets in the next chain two space and two modified single crochets in the next two stitches.

15. Work in the same way until the end of the round. Notice that the holes are not perfectly aligned where a new round starts: this is normal when you work in continuous rounds.

12. Pull the yarn through. You have just made a modified single crochet increase.

13. Continue making modified single crochet increases in every stitch until the end of the round.

Round 3

14. Start round 3 with a modified single crochet increase.
