In this free step-by-step crochet stitch tutorial I show how to make the half double crochet slip stitch back loop only stitch (hdc-slst-blo). This stitch is a solid, textured crochet stitch. It is also a reversible crochet stitch that looks the same on both sides. It creates dense, durable, thick fabric and works great for potholders, washcloths, decorative pillow covers, bags, table mats and other projects that need structure and durability.
This crochet stitch tutorial includes detailed photo instructions. The half double crochet slip stitch back loop only stitch is a repeat of one row.

To make a stitch in the back loop only, you have to insert your hook in the middle of the “v” and grab only the part of the “v” that is further from you, that is the back loop. Next, make the stitch as usual. The tutorial below shows how to make the half double crochet slip stitch back loop only.

Materials and tools
Yarn: For this tutorial I use Hjertegarn DIAMOND mercerized cotton 100% 8/4 50 g yarn, color: 3304 (lilac). However, you can use your favorite yarn depending on the crochet project.
Hook: I use a 2.0 mm hook. If you are using a different yarn, choose the hook size that is recommended on your yarn label.
