In this step-by-step crochet stitch tutorial I show how to make the cross single crochet stitch working in rounds and in rows. This crochet stitch tutorial includes detailed photo instructions. The cross stitch single crochet stitch is a repeat of one round or row. The fabric turns out dense and it has a nice texture. It looks different when working in rows and in rounds.
For this tutorial I use Järbo 8/4 100% Cotton Mercerized & Gassed 50 g, color: 32032 (frosty green), and a 2.0 mm hook.

Photo instructions for the cross stitch single crochet working in rounds
Round 1

1. Start by making any number of chains.

2. You will work in rounds, so you have to join the end of the chain to its beginning. Insert your hook in the first chain. Make sure that the chain is not twisted.

3. Then yarn over.

4. Pull the yarn through (including the loop on your hook) making a slip stitch. Now the chain is joined to its beginning.

5. Then chain one. Next you will make a cross stitch single crochet.

6. So, insert your hook in the next stitch (in the back of the chain).

7. Then, instead of yarning over, yarn under.

8. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

9. Then yarn over.

10. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. You have just made a cross stitch single crochet.

11. Make the second cross stitch single crochet in the next stitch.

12. Continue working in the same way until the end of the round.

13. At the end of the round, insert your hook in the top of the first cross stitch single crochet of this round.

14. Then yarn over.

15. Pull the yarn through making a slip stitch.
Round 2

16. Chain one. (Alternatively you can don’t join with a slip stitch and work in continuous rounds: instead of making a slip stitch, make a cross stitch single crochet in the top of the first stitch of this round.)

17. Make a cross stitch single crochet in the next stitch.

18. Continue making cross stitch single crochets in every stitch until the end of the round. Join with a slip stitch. For the rest of the pattern repeat round 2.
