Extended single crochet coaster

I am happy to be back from summer break and share with you a quick beginner friendly project, an extended single crochet coaster. The extended single crochet stitch is easy to make and gives a very nice texture. For my coaster I added a simple border of single crochets and combined two colors: offwhite and frosty green. However, if you will use only one color, your coaster will still look great.

You can also take a look at my other patterns here.

Good luck!

Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used Järbo 8/4 100% Cotton “Mercerized & Gassed” 50 g (colors: offwhite and frosty green).
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 2.0.

Notes

The size of my coaster is 10.5 x 10.5 cm. First you will be working in rows and then in rounds to make a nice border. This pattern uses the extended single crochet stitch. Photo instructions below show the main steps how to make this stitch. It is a repeat of one row. The size of the coaster can be easily adjusted by chaining more or less in the beginning and making a certain number of rows to form a nice rectangle (it can be any number of rows).

Pattern

Start by chaining 26 (you can adjust the size by chaining more or less, it can be an even or an odd number of chains).

Row 1: In the third chain from your hook make an esc (in the back of the chain). Then make esc in every st until the end of the row.

Row 2: ch 2 (it counts as a st), make esc in every st of the prev row. The last esc should be made in the turning chain 2 of the prev round.

Row 3-17: repeat row 2.

Now you will start working in rounds.

Round 1: ch 1 (it counts as a st), sc in every st of the prev round, 3 sc in the corner, sc along the side of the coaster (3 sc for every 2 rows), 3 sc in the corner, sc in every stitch, 3 sc in the corner, sc along the side of the coaster (3 sc for every 2 rows), 2 sc in the corner, join with a sl st to the ch 1 that you made in the beginning of the round.

Change yarn color to white (see photo instructions).

Round 2: ch 1 (it counts as a st), sc in every st of the prev round, 3 sc in the corner, sc along the side of the coaster (3 sc for every 2 rows), 3 sc in the corner, sc in every stitch, 3 sc in the corner, sc along the side of the coaster (3 sc for every 2 rows), 3 sc in the corner, join with a sl st to the ch 1 that you made in the beginning of the round.

Round 3: ch 1 (it counts as a st), sc in every st of the prev round, 3 sc in the corner, sc along the side of the coaster (3 sc for every 2 rows), 3 sc in the corner, sc in every stitch, 3 sc in the corner, sc along the side of the coaster (3 sc for every 2 rows), 3 sc in the corner, 1 sc in the next st, join with a sl st to the ch 1 that you made in the beginning of the round.

Change yarn color to green.

Round 4: ch 1 (it counts as a st), sc in every st of the prev round, 3 sc in the corner, sc along the side of the coaster (3 sc for every 2 rows), 3 sc in the corner, sc in every stitch, 3 sc in the corner, sc along the side of the coaster (3 sc for every 2 rows), 3 sc in the corner, 2 sc in the next 2 sts, join with a sl st to the ch 1 that you made in the beginning of the round.

Fasten off.

Photo instructions for an extended single crochet coaster

Row 1

1. Start by chaining 26.

2. Insert your hook in the third chain from your hook (in the back of the chain).

3. Yarn over.

4. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

5. Yarn over.

6. Pull the yarn through the first loop on your hook. Now you have two loops on your hook.

7. Then yarn over again.

8. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. You have just made an extended single crochet!

9. Make an extended single crochet in the next stitch.

10. Keep working in the same way until the end of the row.

11. Then chain two.

Row 2

12. Turn your work around. Now you have to make an extended single crochet in the next stitch like it is shown in the picture (chain two that you have just made counts as a stitch).

13. So, make an extended single crochet in the next stitch.

14. Keep working in the same way until the end of the row. Then you will have to make an extended single crochet in the turning chain.

15. For rows 3-17 repeat row 2.

Round 1

16. To make a nice border, you will make single crochets around the rectangle. So, when you finish row 17, chain one and turn your work around (this chain counts as a stitch).

17. Then make a single crochet in the next stitch.

18. Keep making single crochets in every stitch until the end of the row. Then don’t turn your work around and continue working on the side of the coaster. For every corner you have to make three single crochets in the same stitch. This means that now you will have to make one more single crochet in the same stitch (the last stitch of the row) like it is shown in the picture.

19. So, make a single crochet.

20. Then make the third single crochet in the same stitch.

21. Keep making single crochets on the side of the coaster. Try to make three single crochets for every two rows. The exact number is not that important, but your coaster should not curl. Also, try to make the same number of stitches on each side of the coaster.

22. So, keep making single crochets on the side of the coaster.

23. When you reach the end of the side, you will have to make three single crochets in the last stitch to form a corner.

24. So, make three single crochets in the same stitch, turn your work and keep making single crochets on the side of the coaster.

25. Work in the same way until you reach the beginning of the round. For the last corner, make two single crochets in the last stitch and join with a slip stitch to the chain one that you made in the beginning of the round.

Round 2

26. For round 2 you have to change yarn color. So, take your white yarn and chain one. Then pull the end of the green yarn to tighten the loop and secure the white yarn. Now the white yarn is ready to use.

27. Chain one with the white yarn.

28. Then make single crochets in every stitch of the previous round.

29. Like in round 1, you have to make three single crochets in the same stitch for each corner. When you reach the beginning of the round, join with a slip stitch to the chain one that you made in the beginning of this round.

Round 3

30. Work in the same way like in round 2.

Round 4

31. For round 4 you have to change the yarn color again. So, chain one with the green yarn and pull the end of the white yarn to secure the green yarn.

32. Chain one and keep making single crochets like in the previous round.

33. When you reach the end of the round, join with a slip stitch and fasten off.
