In this free step-by-step crochet stitch tutorial I show how to make the puff and picot stitch. The puff and picot stitch is a lacy crochet stitch. The fabric turns out light and breathable, and it has a nice texture. It works great for shawls and wraps, lightweight scarves, lacy crochet summer tops and tanks, and other summer crochet projects. This stitch can also be used for decorative crochet projects for the home.
This crochet stitch tutorial includes detailed photo instructions. The puff and picot stitch is a repeat of two rows. For this crochet stitch you should know how to make single crochet and double crochet. The tutorial below shows how to make the puff stitch and picot stitch.
Materials and tools
Yarn: For this tutorial I use Soft FRAYA Cotton 8/4 100% Organic cotton 50g – 180 m yarn, color: curry. However, you can use your favorite yarn depending on the crochet project.
Hook: I use a 2.0 mm hook. If you are using a different yarn, choose the hook size that is recommended on your yarn label.

Row 1
1. Start by chaining a multiple of seven plus two. You will start working in the second chain from your hook.
2. So, make a single crochet in the second chain from your hook.
3. Make a single crochet in the next stitch.
4. Chain seven, skip four stitches and make a single crochet in the next stitch.
5. Chain one, skip one stitch and make a single crochet in the next stitch.
6. Chain seven, skip four stitches and make a single crochet in the next stitch.
7. Then repeat. Chain one, skip one stitch and make a single crochet in the next stitch.
8. Chain seven, skip four stitches and make a single crochet in the next stitch.
9. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.
10. At the end of the row, when you have one stitch left, make a single crochet in the last stitch.
Row 2
11. Chain six and turn your work around.
12. Make a single crochet in the fourth chain of the next chain seven.
13. Next you will make a picot. So, chain three.
14. To close the picot you will make a slip stitch. So, insert your hook in the first chain.
15. Yarn over and pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.
16. Pull the first loop through the second one. You have just made a picot!
17. Chain three. Next you will make a puff stitch in the next chain one space.
18. So, yarn over.
19. Insert your hook in the next chain one space and yarn over.
20. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.
21. Yarn over.
22. Insert your hook in the same chain one space and yarn over.
23. Pull the yarn through. Now you have five loops on your hook.
24. Yarn over.
25. Insert your hook in the same chain one space and yarn over.
26. Pull the yarn through. Now you have seven loops on your hook.
27. Yarn over and pull the yarn through the first six loops on your hook. Now you have two loops on your hook.
28. Yarn over and pull the yarn through both loops. You have just made a puff stitch!
29. Chain three and make a single crochet in the fourth chain of the next chain seven.
30. Make a picot: chain three and make a slip stitch in the first chain.
31. Then repeat. Chain three and make a puff stitch in the next chain one space.
32. Chain three and make a single crochet in the fourth chain of the next chain seven.
33. Make a picot.
34. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.
35. At the end of the row chain three and make a double crochet in the last stitch.
Row 3
36. Chain one and turn your work around. Chain one does not count as a stitch.
37. Make a single crochet in the first stitch.
38. Make a single crochet in the next chain three space.
39. Chain seven and make a single crochet in the next chain three space.
40. Chain one and make a single crochet in the next chain three space.
41. Then repeat. Chain seven and make a single crochet in the next chain three space.
42. Chain one and make a single crochet in the next chain three space.
43. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.
44. At the end of the row chain seven and make two single crochets in the turning chain space. For the rest of the pattern repeat rows 2-3.
Finished puff and picot stitch
45. Done!
