Half double crochet (hdc)

This crochet stitch tutorial shows how to make a half double crochet (hdc) step-by-step. It is one of my favorite stitches. I use this stitch in my cross stitch dishcloth, chunky infinity scarf, easy hat, crochet infinity scarf Calypso and many other projects.

The texture of this stitch is quite simple but it looks very good. The fabric turns out dense, so it works great for making hats and scarfs.

Row 1

1. Start by chaining any number of chains. You will start working in the third chain from your hook. The loop that is on your hook does not count as a stitch.

2. So, yarn over.

3. Insert your hook in the third chain from your hook.

4. Yarn over.

5. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

6. Yarn over.

7. Pull the yarn through all three loops on your hook. You have just made a half double crochet!

8. Make another one in the next stitch.

9. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.

10. At the end of the row chain two.

Row 2

11. Turn your work around. Chain two does not count as a stitch. You will start working in the first stitch.

12. So, make a half double crochet in the first stitch.

13. Continue making half double crochets in every stitch until the end of the row. The last stitch should be made in the last half double crochet of the previous row. For the rest of the pattern repeat row 2.
