How to make a round base

This tutorial shows how to make a round base in tapestry crochet which can be used in making round drawstring bags and baskets.

In all Nordic Hook patterns the base is in one color. The written pattern and photo instructions show how to make a round base.

Written pattern

Start by making an adjustable (magic) ring with the green yarn.

Round 1: 8 sc in the adjustable ring. (8 st in total)

Introduce the white yarn.

Round 2: msc inc in every st. (16 st)

Round 3: *msc inc, 1 msc in the next st*, rep ** 8 times. (24 st)

Round 4: msc; *msc inc, 2 msc*, rep ** 7 times, msc inc, 1 msc. (32 st)

Round 5: 2 msc; *msc inc, 3 msc*, rep ** 7 times, msc inc, msc. (40 st)

Round 6: msc; *msc inc, 4 msc*, rep ** 7 times, msc inc, 3 msc. (48 st)

Photo instructions for how to make a round base

Round 1

1. Start by making an adjustable (magic) ring with the main yarn. Then make 8 single crochets in the adjustable ring.

2. Pull the end of the adjustable ring to tighten it up.

Round 2

3. Don’t join with a slip stitch. Instead you will start working on round 2. So, insert your hook in the first single crochet of the previous round grabbing just the back loop.

4. Yarn over.

5. Pull the the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

6. In round 2 you should introduce the second yarn. So, take your white yarn and place it like it shown in the picture.

7. Yarn under the green yarn.

8. Pull the yarn through. You have just made a modified single crochet and secured the white yarn.

9. To make a modified single crochet increase you have to make the second modified single crochet in the same stitch where you have just worked in. So, insert your hook in the same stitch.
