This step-by-step crochet tutorial shows the main steps how to make a modified single crochet. This stitch is very useful in tapestry crochet projects.
A modified single crochet is a very similar stitch to the usual single crochet, however, there are two differences. First, you should work in the back loop only. Second, instead of yarning over in the last step you should yarn under. When you work in the back loop only, the stitches align nicely on top of each other and the color pattern does not move to one side. Yarning under in the last step helps to hide the yarn that you are not working with a bit better than the usual single crochet.

1. Insert your hook grabbing just the back loop (the yarn that you are not working with should be in front of your hook).

2. Yarn over (the main yarn that you are working with).

3. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

4. Then yarn under like it is shown in the picture.

5. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. You have just made a modified single crochet!
