How to work in the third loop only in the front (3lo-f)

This tutorial shows how to work in the third loop only in the front. To make this stitch you need to have a previous row of half double crochets. Here it is shown how to make single crochet third only in the front (sc-3lo-f). I use this stitch in my cross stitch dishcloth and other projects.

To find the third loop in the front, you should look in the front side of you work. Here, a bit below the “v”, there is another loop called the third loop in the front. To make a stitch in the third loop only in the front, you have to insert your hook in the loop below the “v”. Next, make the stitch as usually.

The picture above shows how your work looks like when you work in the third loop only in the front: working in the third loop in the front forms this beautiful chain on the other side of your work.

Photo instructions

Row 1

1. Start by chaining any number of chains. You will start working in the third chain from your hook.

2. So, make a half double crochet in the third chain from your hook.

3. Continue making half double crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

4. At the end of the row chain one.

Row 2

5. Turn your work around. Chain one does not count as a stitch. You will work in the third loop of the first stitch. The third loop is below the “v” on the front side facing you.

6. So, insert your hook in grabbing just the third loop in the front.

7. Yarn over.

8. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

9. Yarn over.

10. Pull the yarn through both loops. You have just made a single crochet third loop only in the front!

11. Then make another one working in the third loop only in the front of the next stitch.

12. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.

13. To get the same stitch pattern as in the example, you will make two more rows of single crochets and then one row of half double crochets. So, at the end of row 2 chain one.

Row 3

14. Turn your work around. Chain one does not count as a stitch. You will start working in the first stitch.

15. So, make a single crochet in the first stitch.

16. Continue making single crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

17. At the end of the row chain one.

Row 4

18. Turn your work around. Chain one does not count as a stitch. You will start working in the first stitch.

19. Make a single crochet in the first stitch.

20. Continue making single crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

21. At the end of the row chain two.

Row 5

22. Turn your work around. Chain two does not count as a stitch. You will work in the first stitch.

23. So, make a half double crochet in the first stitch.

24. Continue making half double crochets in every stitch until the end of the row. For the rest of the pattern repeat rows 2-5.

25. Done!
