Here is a free crochet pattern for a cross stitch dishcloth (or washcloth). It is always nice to make something practical. This dishcloth is quick to make, but it also allows you to practice some stitches: cross stitch double crochet, single crochet in the third loop only in the front, etc. I used a slightly smaller hook than is recommended on the yarn label to make the dishcloth a bit tighter and denser. But you are free to use the hook size you feel is most suitable; you can make a small sample with different hook sizes and choose the best one.
The pattern includes a list of materials, abbreviations, notes, a written pattern, and a chart. You can find my other free crochet patterns for washcloths and potholders here and more free crochet projects here.

Materials
- Yarn: I use grey Somerset Linen silk yarn 50 g from a local store. However, any cotton yarn is great for dishcloths because it absorbs water well.
- I use a 2.0 mm hook. If you are using a different yarn, choose the hook size that is recommended on your yarn label.
Abbreviations (US terms)
- ch: chain
- sc: single crochet
- prev: previous
- st: stitch
- sl st: slip stitch
- dc: double crochet
- hdc: half double crochet
- hdc-blo: half double crochet back loop only
- sc-3lo-f: single crochet in the third loop only in the front
- cross-st-dc: cross stitch double crochet
Notes
First you will be working in rows, then in rounds to make a nice edge. The size of my dishcloth is 16.5 x 15.5 cm. You can adjust the width by choosing a number of multiples of two you chain in the beginning; then make as many rows as needed to make a square dishcloth. Turning chains are not counted as stitches; start working in the first stitch of each previous row.
Pattern
Start with any number of multiples of two + 1 + 2 (or x * 2 + 1 + 2). I chained 40 + 1 + 2 (or 20 * 2 + 1 + 2).
Row 1: hdc in the third ch from your hook and every following ch until the end of the row.
Row 2: ch 1, sc-3lo-f in every hdc of the prev row.
Row 3: ch 3, cross-st-dc until the end of the row, 1 dc in the last st of the prev row.
Row 4: ch 1, sc in every st of the prev row.
Row 5: ch 2, hdc-blo until the end of the row.
Row 6: ch 1, sc-3lo-f until the end of the row.
Row 7-30: repeat rows 3-6 six times.
Edge
Round 1: ch 1, sc in every st (for rows with cross-st-dc make 2 sc in every row; for any other row, make 1 sc per row), 2 sc in every corner. In the last corner ch 14, connect to the corner with a sl st.
Round 2: ch 1, sc in every st of the prev round, 2 sc in a corner. Make 14 sc in the loop yarning around the chain. Connect with a sl st. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
