In this free step-by-step crochet stitch tutorial I show how to make the large lacy zigzag stitch. This stitch is a lacy crochet stitch. The fabric turns out light and breathable. It works great for shawls and wraps, lightweight scarves, lacy crochet summer tops and tanks, and other summer crochet projects. This stitch can also be used in decorative crochet projects for the home.
This crochet stitch tutorial includes detailed photo instructions. The large lacy zigzag stitch is a four-row repeat. For this crochet stitch you should know how to make double crochet.
Materials and tools
Yarn: For this tutorial I use Soft FRAYA Cotton 8/4 100% Organic cotton 50g – 180 m yarn, color: dusty aubergine. However, you can use your favorite yarn depending on the crochet project.
Hook: I use a 2.0 mm hook. If you are using a different yarn, choose the hook size that is recommended on your yarn label.

Photo instructions for the large lacy zigzag stitch
Row 1
1. Start by chaining a multiple of seven plus four. You will start working in the fourth chain from your hook.
2. So, make a double crochet in the fourth chain from your hook.
3. Make another double crochet in the same stitch.
4. Chain three.
5. Skip five stitches and make two double crochets in the next stitch.
6. Then repeat. Make two double crochets in the next stitch.
7. Chain three.
8. Skip five stitches and make two double crochets in the next stitch.
9. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row until you have one stitch left.
10. Then make a double crochet in the last stitch.
Row 2
11. Chain three and turn your work around. Chain three counts as a stitch.
12. Make four double crochets in the next chain three space.
13. Chain two.
14. Make four double crochets in the same chain three space.
15. Then repeat. Make four double crochets in the next chain three space.
16. Chain two.
17. Make four double crochets in the same chain three space.
18. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.
19. At the end of the row make a double crochet in the turning chain.
Row 3
20. Chain five and turn your work around.
21. Make four double crochets in the next chain two space.
22. Chain three.
23. Make four double crochets in the next chain two space.
24. Then repeat. Chain three.
25. Make four double crochets in the next chain two space.
26. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.
27. At the end of the row chain two and make a double crochet in the turning chain.
Row 4
28. Chain four and turn your work around.
29. Make four double crochets in the chain two space.
30. Make four double crochets in the next chain three space.
31. Chain two.
32. Make four double crochets in the same chain three space.
33. Then repeat. Make four double crochets in the next chain three space.
34. Chain two.
35. Make four double crochets in the same chain three space.
36. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.
37. At the end of the row make four double crochets in the turning chain space.
38. Then chain one and make another double crochet in the turning chain space.
Row 5
39. Chain three and turn your work around. Chain three counts as a stitch.
40. Make two double crochets in the chain one space.
41. Chain three.
42. Make four double crochets in the next chain two space.
43. Then repeat. Chain three.
44. Make four double crochets in the next chain two space.
45. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.
46. At the end of the row chain three.
47. Then make three double crochets in the turning chain space. For the rest of the pattern repeat rows 2-5.
