Moss stitch

This crochet stitch tutorial shows how to make the moss stitch. This stitch is sometimes also called linen or granite stitch. It is quite simple to make: you only need to know how to make a chain and a single crochet, so it is beginner friendly.

For this tutorial I use Soft FRAYA Cotton 8/4 100% Organic cotton 50g – 180 m yarn, colors: dusty aubergine and dusty tulip, and a 2.0 mm hook.

I use the moss stitch in my moss stitch table mat and the moss stitch crochet drawstring bag.

Photo instructions

Row 1

1. Start by chaining an even number of chains. You will start working in the fourth chain from your hook.

2. So, make a single crochet in the fourth chain from your hook.

3. Chain one.

4. Skip one stitch and make a single crochet in the next stitch.

5. Then repeat: chain one, skip one stitch and make a single crochet in the next stitch.

6. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row. The row should end with a single crochet.

7. At the end of the row chain two.

Row 2

8. Turn your work around. You will work in the chain one space of the previous row.

9. So, make a single crochet in the chain one space of the previous row.

10. Then chain one.

11. Make a single crochet in the next chain one space of the previous row.

12. Then repeat: chain one and make a single crochet in the next chain one space.

13. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.

14. Make the last single crochet in the chain space that is at the end of the previous row.

15. If you wish to have the same color pattern as in this example, you have to change yarn color. So, take the second color yarn and chain one.

16. Then pull the end of the first color yarn to tighten up and secure the second color yarn. Now your second color yarn is ready to use. (Alternatively, to change color you could complete the last single crochet of the previous row with the second color yarn).

17. Chain two.

Row 3

18. For the rest of the pattern you have to repeat row 2.

19. So, make a single crochet in the chain one space of the previous row.

20. Then chain one and make a single crochet in the next chain one space.

21. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.

Row 4

22. Then repeat row 2 again. For the rest of the pattern repeat row 2 and change yarn color every two rows.

23. Done!
