For this crochet stitch you should know how to make a single crochet and a half double crochet. The tutorial below shows how to make a single crochet back loop only. The open ridge stitch is a repeat of two rows. The fabric has a beautiful texture.

Photo instructions for the open ridge stitch
Row 1

1. Start by chaining an odd number of chains. You will start working in the second chain from your hook.

2. So, make a single crochet in the second chain from your hook.

3. Continue making single crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.
Row 2

4. Chain two and turn your work around. Chain two counts as a stitch.

5. Make a half double crochet in the third stitch.

6. Next you will make a half double crochet working around the post of the half double crochet you have just made. So, yarn over.

7. Insert your hook grabbing the post of the half double crochet and yarn over.

8. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

9. Yarn over.

10. Pull the yarn through all loops on your hook.

11. Skip the next stitch and make a half double crochet in the next one.

12. Make a half double crochet around the post of the last half double crochet.

13. Then repeat. Skip one stitch, make a half double crochet in the next one, and a half double crochet around the post of the last half double crochet.

14. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row until you have one stitch left.

15. Then make a half double crochet in the last stitch.
Row 3

16. Chain one and turn your work around. Chain one does not count as a stitch.

17. Next you will make a single crochet back loop only in the first stitch.

18. So, insert your hook grabbing just the back loop of the first stitch and yarn over.

19. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

20. Yarn over.

21. Pull the yarn through both loops. You have just made a single crochet back loop only.

22. Continue making single crochets back loop only in every stitch until the end of the row.

23. At the end of the row make a single crochet in the turning chain. For the rest of the pattern repeat rows 2-3.
