Reversible crochet mug rug

I am happy to introduce a free crochet pattern for a reversible crochet mug rug. For this pattern I use the modified caramel stitch (see the tutorial here or below in the photo instructions for this pattern). As the stitch is reversible, you can use the mug rug on both sides. Personally, I like both sides and I think that the “bad” side has even more texture and makes the mug rug more interesting.

I added a fringe, but you can skip this last step and have it as a simple coaster.

Good luck!

Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used Järbo 8/4 100% Cotton “Mercerized & Gassed” 50 g (offwhite and linen).
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 2.0.

Notes

The size of my mug rug without a fringe is 8.0 x 11.0 cm. You will be working in rows. This pattern uses the modified caramel stitch (or modified caramel cone stitch). Photo instructions below show the main steps how to make this stitch. It consists of a single crochet rows and a modified caramel stitch row. This stitch is reversible, so the mug rug looks great from both sides.

Pattern

Start by chaining 26 with offwhite yarn.

Row 1: In the second chain from your hook make a sc. Continue making sc until the end of the row.

Row 2-3: ch 1, sc until the end of the row.

Change to linen yarn.

Row 4: ch 1, sc in the very first st, *caramel st in the next st, sc in the next st,* repeat until the end of the row. Your row should end with a sc. (see photo instructions below showing how to make a modified caramel st).

Row 5: ch 1, sc until the end of the row.

Change to offwhite yarn.

Row 6-9: ch 1, sc until the end of the row.

Change to linen yarn.

Row 10: repeat row 4.

Row 11: repeat row 5.

Row 12-17: repeat row 6-11.

Row 18-23: repeat row 6-11.

Change to offwhite yarn.

Row 24: ch 1, sc until the end of the row.

Making the edge

To make a nice edge continue making sc with your offwhite yarn on the side of the mug rug. Make 2 sc in each linen part and 3 sc in each offwhite part (like it is shown in the pictures below). Join with a sl st at the end of the row. In total you should have 20 st on the side of the mug rug. Cut the yarn and fasten off.

Do the same to the other side of the mug rug. Fasten off and add a fringe working in every third st on the shorter side of the mug rug (see photo instructions with more explanations).

Photo instructions

Row 1

1. Make 26 chains with the offwhite yarn. You will start working in the second chain from your hook like it is shown in the picture.

2. So, make a single crochet in the second chain from your hook. For this pattern, I am working in the back of the chain.

3. Continue making single crochets until the end of the row.

Rows 2-3

4. Then make the second and the third row of single crochets.

5. Now you will make the caramel stitch. Chain one with the linen yarn. Pull the end of the offwhite yarn to secure the linen yarn. Now your linen yarn is ready to use.

Row 4

6. Chain one and turn your work around.

7. Make a single crochet in the very first stitch (here chain 1 that you made in the beginning does not count as a stitch).

8. Next you will be working in the next stitch, then in between two single crochets one row below and in between two single crochets two rows below like it is shown in the picture.

9. So, yarn over.

10. Insert your hook in the next stitch, grab the yarn and pull it through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

11. Yarn over.

12. Insert your hook in between two single crochets one row below.

13. Grab the yarn and pull it trough. Now you have five loops on your hook.

14. Yarn over.

15. Insert your hook in between two single crochets two rows below.

16. Grab the yarn and pull it through. Now you have seven loops on your hook.

17. Yarn over.

18. Pull the yarn through all seven loops. Now you have one loop on your hook.

19. Make a single crochet in the next stitch and then a caramel stitch in the next one. Keep alternating them until the end of this row.

20. You should finish the row with a single crochet.

Row 5

21. Then chain one, turn your work around and make a row of single crochets (this is your fifth row).

Rows 6-23

22. Then make four rows of single crochets in offwhite (row 6-9), caramel stitch row in linen (row 10) and one row of single crochets in linen (row 11). Repeat rows 6-11 two times.

Row 24

23. Then make a row of single crochets with the offwhite yarn.

Making the edge

24. Now turn your work. You will be working on the side of the mug rug.

25. Make 2 sc in the linen part and 3 sc in the offwhite part.

26. At the end of the row join with a sl st. In total you should have 20 st on this side.

27. Do the same to the other side. In this picture you can see the “good” side of the mug rug.

28. This is how the “bad” side looks like.

Making the fringe

29. Next you should make a fringe. To do that, cut 2 pieces of offwhite yarn that are around 7 cm long. Then insert your hook in the side of the mug rug like it is shown in the picture. Take two pieces of yarn.

30. Grab those two pieces with your hook.

31. Pull the through. Now you have a loop on your hook.

32. Then grab those four ends with your hook.

33. Pull them through the loop. If you cannot grab the ends with your hook, then make the loop on your hook bigger, remove the hook and try to pull those ends through the loop with your fingers.

34. Pull the ends to tighten it up. Then skip two stitches and make the next one. Continue until the end of the row (you can make 7 or 8 on each side). Then do the same to the other side.
