The cross over stitch

In this free step-by-step tutorial I show how to make the cross over stitch. This stitch is a solid crochet stitch. It creates dense, durable fabric and works great for washcloths, scarves, blankets, cardigans and other projects that need warmth, structure, and durability.

This crochet stitch tutorial includes detailed photo instructions. The cross over stitch is a repeat of two rows. For this crochet stitch you should know how to make single crochet and double crochet. The tutorial below shows how to make a long double crochet.

Materials and tools

Yarn: For this tutorial I use Järbo 8/4 100% Cotton Mercerized & Gassed 50 g yarn, color: 32018 (linen). However, you can use your favorite yarn depending on the crochet project.

Hook: I use a 2.0 mm hook. If you are using a different yarn, choose the hook size that is recommended on your yarn label.

Row 1

1. Start by chaining multiples of four plus one.

2. Make a single crochet in the second chain from your hook.

3. Keep making single crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

4. At the end of the row chain three.

Row 2

5. Turn your work around. Chain tree that you have just made counts as a stitch. This means that you will start working in the second stitch.

6. So, make a double crochet.

7. Then skip one stitch and make a double crochet.

8. Make two more double crochets in the next two stitches. Now you will have to make a long double crochet in the stitch that you have skipped.

9. So, yarn over.

10. Insert your hook in the stitch that you have skipped.

11. Grab the yarn.

12. Pull the yarn through and make a long loop like it is shown in the picture. Now you have three loops on your hook.

15. Yarn over.

16. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. Next you will have to skip one stitch.

18. Make a long double crochet in the stitch that you have skipped.

19. Keep working in the same way until the end of the row.

20. Make two double crochets in the last two stitches.

21. Then chain one.

Row 3

22. Turn your work around. Chain one that you have just made does not count as a stitch. This means that you will start working in the very first stitch.

23. So, make a single crochet in the very first stitch.

24. Keep making single crochets in every stitch until the end of the row. For the rest of the pattern repeat rows 2 and 3.
