The falling leaves stitch

In this step-by-step crochet tutorial I show how to make the falling leaves stitch. This stitch is so beautiful! The stitch is a repeat of four rows and it looks different on both sides. I hope that you will like this stitch too and give it a try 🙂

For this tutorial I use Soft FRAYA Cotton 8/4 100% Organic cotton 50g – 180 m yarn, color: blue agave, and a 2.0 mm hook.

Photo instructions for the falling leaves crochet stitch

Row 1

1. Start by chaining multiples of four plus two.

2. In the second chain from your hook make a single crochet.

3. Continue making single crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

4. Then chain one.

Row 2

5. Turn your work around. Chain one does not count as a stitch, so you will start working in the very first stitch.

6. Make a single crochet in the first stitch.

7. Then continue making single crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

8. At the end of the row chain three.

Row 3

9. Turn your work around. Chain three counts as a stitch, so you will start working in the second stitch.

10. Make a double crochet in the second stitch.

11. Then make two more double crochets in the next two stitches.

12. Next you will have to make a leaf stitch in the single crochet two rows below (the fifth single crochet in row 1). So, yarn over.

13. Insert your hook two rows below bringing the post of the single crochet forward.

14. Yarn over.

15. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

16. Yarn over.

17. Insert your hook in the same place as before, bringing the post of the single crochet two rows below forward.

18. Yarn over.

19. Pull the yarn through. Now you have five loops on your hook.

20. Yarn over.

21. Pull the yarn through the first four loops on your hook. Now you have two loops on your hook.

22. Yarn over.

23. Pull the yarn through both loops. You have just made a leaf stitch.

24. Next you have to skip one stitch that is hiding behind the leaf stitch and work in the next one.

25. So, skip one stitch and make a double crochet.

26. Then make two more double crochets in the next two stitches. Next you will make a leaf stitch in the single crochet two rows below (skip three single crochets in the first row from the last leaf stitch).

27. So, make a leaf stitch to the single crochet two rows below.

28. Then skip one stitch that is hiding behind the leaf stitch and make three double crochets in the next three stitches.

29. Keep working in the same way until the end of the row: make a leaf stitch in the single crochet two rows below, skip one stitch behind the leaf stitch and make three double crochets in the next three stitches.

30. When you have five stitches left, skip the one that is behind the leaf stitch and make four double crochets in the last four stitches.

31. Then chain one.

Row 4

32. Turn your work around. Chain one does not count as a stitch, so you will start working in the first stitch.

33. So, make a single crochet in the first stitch.

34. Continue making single crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

35. At the end of the row chain three.

Row 5

36. Turn your work around. Chain three counts as a stitch, so you will start working in the second stitch.

37. Make a double crochet in the second stitch. Next you will make a leaf stitch in the double crochet two rows below (the third double crochet in row 3).

38. So, make the leaf stitch in the double crochet two rows below (work in the same way as before: insert your hook bringing the post of the double crochet forward and complete the leaf stitch).

39. Then, as usual, skip one stitch that is behind the leaf stitch and make three double crochets in the next three stitches. Next you will make a leaf stitch in the double crochet two rows below (in the middle one out of three).

40. So, make a leaf stitch in the double crochet two rows below. Then skip one stitch that is behind the leaf stitch and make three double crochets in the next three stitches.

41. Work in the same way until the end of the row.

42. In the end of the row, skip one stitch that is behind the leaf stitch and make two double crochets in the last two stitches. For the rest of the pattern repeat rows 2-5.
