The tipped scales stitch

In this step-by-step crochet tutorial I show how to make the tipped scales crochet stitch. For this stitch you should know how to make a double crochet. The photo instructions below show how to make a front post double crochet, a front post treble crochet and a front post double treble crochet that are needed to create a scale.

The tipped scales crochet stitch is a repeat of one row and its texture looks the same on both sides. This stitch works great with two colors as each side is dominated by one color. The fabric turns out quite thick but it stretches too.

I hope that you will give it a try!

Photo instructions for the tipped scales crochet stitch

Row 1

1. Start by chaining a multiple of four plus one. You will start working in the fourth chain from your hook.

2. So, make a double crochet in the fourth chain from your hook.

3. Continue making double crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

4. At the end of the row chain one.

Row 2

5. Turn your work around. Chain one does not count as a stitch, so you will start working in the very first stitch.

6. So, make a double crochet in the very first stitch.

7. Then make another double crochet in the next stitch. Next you will make the first scale working around the post of the double crochet that is in the row below the double crochet that you have just made.

8. The scale consists of a front post double crochet, a front post treble crochet and a front post double treble crochet. So, yarn over.

9. Insert your hook bringing the post of the double crochet in the previous row forward.

10. Yarn over.

11. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

12. Yarn over.

13. Pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook. Now you have two loops on your hook.

37. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. You have just made a front post double treble crochet and completed the first scale!

38. Next you will have to skip three stitches and work in the fourth one.

39. So, skip three stitches and make a double crochet in the next stitch. Now you will make the second scale working in the double crochet that is below the double crochet that you have just made.

40. So, make the second scale in the same way as you did the first one.

41. Then skip three stitches and make a double crochet.

42. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row until you have five stitches left. Then skip three stitches as usually and make two double crochets in the last two stitches (in the double crochet and the turning chain of the previous row).

43. If you wish to use more than one color, right before completing the last double crochet, when you have two loops on your hook, take the second color yarn.

44. Complete the last double crochet with the second color yarn. Now the second color yarn is ready to be used.

45. Chain one.

48. Make another double crochet in the next stitch. Next you will make a scale working in the double crochet that is below the double crochet that you have just made.
