Vintage crochet phone case

This week’s free crochet pattern is for a vintage crochet phone case. This is not only a beginner friendly tapestry crochet project but also a very practical item you could use every day! I think that we all like to change our phone cover from time to time, so why not to freshen it up with this vintage crochet design? I hope that you will like it as much as I do. Also, there is a little secret I want to share: the credit for this design goes to my boyfriend who is great at creating color patterns!

If you are new to the crochet world, keep in mind that it is important to keep your tension as even as possible. This phone case should be fitted well: if it will be too loose, your phone will fall out, if it is too tight, it will be hard to take it out or put it inside. Therefore the width of the case should stay the same in every row. Easier said than done, but try your best and I am sure that it will turn out just great.

If you would like to practice the tapestry crochet technique a bit more, you can try my other tapestry crochet projects: a tapestry crochet bag for glasses, a music note bag, a honey pouch, a mini green diamond bag and a moon bag. If you haven’t tried the tapestry crochet technique before, you can find my tutorial here.

Finally, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me here on the blog or on social media, I am always happy to help. And let me know if you tried to make any of my crochet designs, I would love to see them.

Good luck!

Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used Järbo 8/4 100% Cotton “Mercerized & Gassed” 50 g (offwhite and frosty green).
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 2.0.

Notes

The size of my phone case is 8.0 x 15.5 cm. You will be working in rounds. For this pattern you should be familiar with the tapestry crochet (you can find the tutorial here), Photo instructions below show the main steps how to make a phone case. This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, just instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial here).

Except the first round, every round is made in the same way: chain one, make 43 modified single crochets, join with a slip stitch. Follow the color scheme showing how you should change color. If you need to make a case in a different size, you can take a look at the section “How to adjust the size of the phone case”. Remember to keep an even tension and from time to time check if your phone still fits in well.

Pattern

Start by chaining 21 + 1 with white yarn.

Round 1: To make the first round, you will be working down the chain, then turn and work in the other side of the chain. Make sc in every st of the chain starting from the second chain from your hook. Turn. 1 sc in the end of the chain, make sc in every st (starting with the one you have just worked into; now that st has 3 sc in total) until you come back to the beginning of the chain. 1 sc in the end of the chain. Join with a sl st to the first sc of this round. In total you should have 44 st.

Now add the green yarn and follow the color scheme for all rounds until the end.

Round 2-42: ch 1, msc in every st of the prev round. Join with a sl st.

Fasten off.

How to adjust the size of the phone case

To make the case shorter or longer add or remove rows symmetrically: e.g. remove row 1 and 42, or row 1-2 and 41-42. (See the color scheme)

To adjust the width, start by making a chain. Its length should be equal to your phone’s width. Chain 1 and make the first round (in total you should have: your number of chains x 2; in this formula the additional chain you make in the end should be included in the number of chains). In my case, I chained 21 + 1 = 22. After multiplying by 2, I get 44 stitches in total. Check if your phone fits well. If not, start over 🙂

Let’s call the total number of chains you make in the beginning (22 in my case) A. Use the table below to to adjust the color scheme depending on the number of chains you make in the beginning (A).

Example

If your A is 23 (you chain 22 + 1), then your B is 3 and your C is 3. This means that your A + B columns are in white: 23 + 3 = 26. Then you include the phone picture (17 columns in total): starting from column 27 and ending in columns 43 (because 26 + 17 = 43). The rest of the columns (C) are in white: columns 44 to 46 (because 43 + 3 = 46).

How to read the scheme

Each square represents a stitch and its color. In each round you have 44 stitches (44 columns in the scheme). Rows represent rounds. For each round you have to read the row in the scheme from right to left. The chain that you make in the beginning of each round counts a stitch.

Photo instructions

1. Round 1. Start with a chain.

2. Round 2. Then make single crochets around it. Join with a sl st to the first sc in this round, not to the chain 1. You do this only in the first round, in all other rounds you have to make a sl st into the ch 1 which you make in the beginning of the round.

3. Round 2. Put the green yarn behind your hook and in front of the white yarn that you are working with.

4. Round 2. Chain one. Now your green yarn is secured.

5. Round 2. Make the first msc wrapping the green yarn: start by inserting your hook in the back loop of the next stitch. Yarn over the white yarn.

6. Round 2. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

7. Round 2. Instead of yarning over, like you would do for the usual single crochet, you should yarn under.

8. Round 2. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. You have just made a modified single crochet. Continue until the end of the round.

9. Round 8. In round 8 you need to start changing colors. Start round 8 by chaining 1, then make 32 msc (33 st in total), start the 34th stitch with white yarn, but don’t finish it.

10. Round 8. Yarn under your green yarn.

11. Round 8. Then finish the 34th stitch with green yarn because the 35th stitch is in green.

12. Round 8. Make msc in green (35th stitch).

13. Continue following the color scheme. Done!

Enjoy your vintage crochet phone case!
