Aligned puff stitch coaster

Here is a free crochet pattern for an aligned puff stitch coaster. This coaster is fast and easy to make and looks beautiful on both sides. It is also quite thick so you will need a bit more yarn than for a regular crochet stitch (e.g. a simple double crochet).

You can find my other free crochet patterns here.

Good luck!

Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used Järbo 8/4 100% Cotton “Mercerized & Gassed” 50 g (skyblue ombré).
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 2.0.

Notes

The size of my coaster is 9.0 x 9.0 cm. You will be working in rows and then you will make a border working in a round. This pattern uses the aligned puff stitch. Photo instructions below show the main steps how to make this stitch. It is a repeat of two rows. The size of the coaster can be easily adjusted by chaining more or less in the beginning (keep in mind that it should be an even number of chains) and repeating rows 2 and 3 until you will form a nice rectangle and then adding a border.

Pattern

Start by chaining 26 (you can adjust the size by chaining more or less, but it should be an even number of chains).

Row 1: In the second chain from your hook make a sc (in the back of the chain). *Ch 1, skip 1 st, sc in the next st*, rep ** until the end of the row.

Row 2: ch 2, *make ps in the ch1 space of the prev row, skip one st*, rep * * until the end of the row. Complete the row with a hdc.

Row 3: ch 1, *sc in the ch1 space of the prev row (see photo instructions), ch 1, skip one st*, rep * * until the end of the row. Complete the row with a sc in the turning chain of the prev row.

Row 4-16: repeat row 2 and 3.

Making the border

Round 1: ch 1, sc in every st of the row, 3 sc in the corner. Then turn your work. *2 sc in the ps row, 1 sc in the sc row*, rep until the next corner, 3 sc in the corner. Turn your work, sc in every st, 3 sc in the corner. Turn your work. *2 sc in the ps row, 1 sc in the sc row*, rep until the next corner, join with a sl st to the first st of the round (see photo instructions).

Fasten off.
