Cabbage patch stitch

In this free step-by-step crochet tutorial I show how to make the cabbage patch stitch. This stitch is a solid crochet stitch. It creates dense, durable fabric and works great for washcloths, blankets, scarves, hats, cardigans, and other projects that need warmth, structure, and durability.

Materials and tools

Yarn: For this tutorial I use Järbo 8/4 100% Cotton Mercerized & Gassed 50 g yarn, color: 32032 (frosty green). However, you can use your favorite yarn depending on the crochet project.

Hook: I use a 2.0 mm hook. If you are using a different yarn, choose the hook size that is recommended on your yarn label.

Photo instructions for the cabbage patch crochet stitch

Row 1

1. Start by chaining multiples of four plus three chains.

2. In the fifth chain from your hook make a double crochet.

3. Then make three more double crochets in the same stitch.

4. Skip three chains and make four double crochets in the next chain.

5. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row: skip three stitches and make four double crochets in the next stitch.

6. At the end of the row make one double crochet in the last stitch.

7. Then chain three.

Row 2

8. Turn your work around. Now you will work in the fourth double crochet (out of four) of the previous row.

9. So, make a double crochet in the fourth double crochet (out of four) of the previous row.

10. Then chain two.

11. Next you will have to make a double crochet in the first double crochet (out of four) of the previous row. So, yarn over.

12. Insert your hook in the first double crochet (out of four) in the previous row and yarn over.

13. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

14. Yarn over and pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook. Now you have two loops on your hook.

15. Yarn over and pull the yarn through both loops on your hook.

16. Then make a double crochet in the fourth double crochet crochet (of the next group) in the previous row.

17. Then chain two.

18. Make a double crochet in the first double crochet (of this group) of the previous row.

19. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.

20. At the end of the row make a double crochet in the turning chain of the previous row.

21. Then chain three.

Row 3

22. Turn your work around. Now you will work in the chain two space of the previous row.

23. So, make four double crochets in the chain two space of the previous row.

24. Then make four double crochets in each chain two space until the end of the row.

25. At the end of the row make a double crochet in the turning chain of the previous row. For the rest of the pattern repeat row 2 and 3.
