The popcorn stitch

In this free step-by-step crochet tutorial I show how to make the popcorn stitch. This stitch is a solid, textured crochet stitch. It creates dense, durable fabric and works great for potholders, decorative pillow covers, cardigans, scarves, cowls, bags and other projects that need warmth, structure, and durability.

This crochet stitch tutorial includes detailed photo instructions. The popcorn stitch is a repeat of two rows. For this crochet stitch you should know how to make single crochet and double crochet. The tutorial below shows how to make a popcorn stitch. The fabric turns out very thick and uses a lot of yarn.

Materials and tools

Yarn: For this tutorial I use Hjertegarn DIAMOND mercerized cotton 100% 8/4 50g yarn, color: 3304 (light lilac). However, you can use your favorite yarn depending on the crochet project.

Hook: I use a 2.0 mm hook. If you are using a different yarn, choose the hook size that is recommended on your yarn label.

Photo instructions for the popcorn crochet stitch

Row 1

1. Start by chaining an even number of chains.

2. In the second chain from your hook make a single crochet.

3. Continue making single crochets until the end of the row.

4. Then chain one.

Row 2

5. Turn your work around.

6. Make a single crochet in the first stitch.

7. Then make five double crochets in the next stitch. Next you will have to connect the first double crochet you have just made with the last one.

8. So, take your hook out of the current loop on your hook. Then insert the hook in the first double crochet out of five (insert it towards you like it is shown in the picture).

9. Then grab the loop of the last double crochet.

10. Pull it through. You have just made a popcorn stitch (it pops out on the other side of your work).

11. Make a single crochet in the next stitch.

12. Then make five double crochets in the next stitch.

13. Take out your hook from the current loop and insert it in the first double crochet out of five.

14. Grab the loop of the last double crochet.

15. Pull it through. For the rest of the row work in the same way: make a single crochet in the next stitch, then make a popcorn stitch in the next stitch.

16. The row should end with a single crochet.

17. So, make a single crochet in the last stitch.

18. Then chain one.

Row 3

19. Turn your work around.

20. Notice that the chains of the previous row are “hiding” behind the popcorns, so you can turn the work towards you to be able to see them.

21. Make a single crochet in the first stitch.

22. Continue making single crochets in every stitch until the end of the row. For the rest of the pattern repeat rows 2 and 3.

Finished popcorn crochet stitch

23. Done!
