My pillow is very small, only 28.0 x 28.0 cm, but it is very easy to adjust the size, you just need to follow the formulas that I wrote in the notes section. Also, I sewed my pillow up, but if you prefer to have a zipper so you could take out your pillow from the case, you can easily do that as well. If you are not sure how to do that, you can take a look at my tutorial showing how to sew in a zipper in a crochet pouch, the principle is very similar.

Materials

• Yarn: any thicker yarn will work. I used Strik & Smil SIGNE Acrylic yarn, 50 g (~133 m) (green and yellow).
• Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 4.0.

• st: stitch
• sl st: slip stitch
• ch: chain
• sc: single crochet
• rep **: repeat from * to *

Notes

The size of my crochet pillow is 28.0 x 28.0 cm. You will be working in rounds. Photo instructions below show the main steps how to make the pillow case. For this beginner friendly pattern I use the single crochet mesh stitch, which is a repeat of one round and consists only of chains and single crochets.

It is easy to adjust the size of this pillow. With your green yarn make a chain which length would be equal to the width of your pillow plus two chains. Then work in rounds until you reach the height of the green part 1 = the height of your pillow x 0.2. Then change your yarn color and keep working in rounds until the height of the yellow part = the height of your pillow x 0.25. Then change your yarn color to green again and keep working in rounds until you reach the height of your pillow (the height of the green part 2 = the height of your pillow x 0.55).

Pattern

Make a chain which length would be equal to the width of your pillow plus 2 chains. I chained 50.

Round 1: sc in the third chain from your hook. *ch 1, skip one st, sc in the next st*, rep ** until the end of the row. Ch1, sc in the same st. Turn your work, *ch 1, skip one st, sc in the next st*, rep ** until you reach the beginning of the round. Ch 1, join with a sl to the first sc of this round.

Round 2: ch 1, sc in the very first st (sc of the previous round). *ch 1, skip one st, sc in the next st*, rep ** until the end of the round. Ch 1, join with a sl to to the first sc of this round.

For the rest of the pattern keep repeating round 2. When the height of the green part 1 reaches the height of your pillow x 0.2, change color to yellow (I changed after 11 rounds). Keep working in rounds. When the height of the yellow part reaches the height of your pillow x 0.25, change color to green (I changed after round 25). Keep working in rounds until you reach the height of your pillow. Insert your pillow and sew it up.

Round 1

1. Make a chain which length would be equal to your pillow’s width. Then make two additional chains.

2. Next make a single crochet in the third chain from your hook.

3. Chain one.

4. Skip one stitch and make a single crochet.

5. Chain one, skip one stitch and make a single crochet. Keep working in the same way until the end of the row.

6. Then chain one and make a single crochet in the same stitch. Turn your work. Now you will be working on the other side of the chain.

7. Chain one, skip one stitch, make a single crochet in the next stitch. Keep working in the same way until you reach the beginning of this first round.

8. Then chain one.

9. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet of this round.

Round 2

10. Then chain one and make a single crochet in the single crochet of the previous round.

11. Chain one.

12. Skip one stitch and make a single crochet (in the single crochet of the previous round).

13. Keep working in the same way until the end of the round. Chain one.

14. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet of this round.

Round 12

15. When you need to change your yarn color, in the beginning of the round chain one with your yellow yarn.

16. Then pull the end of the green yarn to tighten the yellow yarn. Chain one with the yellow yarn. Then work in the same way as before: make a single crochet in the single crochet of the previous round, chain one, skip one stitch and make a single crochet.

Round 26

17. When you reach the desired height of the yellow part, change the yarn color again.

18. Keep working in the same way as before until you reach the height of your pillow.

19. The pillow case is ready.

Sewing up the crochet pillow

20. Take a piece of green yarn and a tapestry needle.

21. Insert the needle grabbing just two loops from each side like it is shown in the picture.

22. Pull the yarn through. Then insert the needle in the next two loops like it is shown in the picture. Insert the pillow (filling) and finish sewing it up.

Notes

You will be working in rows to make two pieces, the front and the back, then in rounds to connect them. The size of my pillow is 35×26 cm, but you can make any size you want. To adjust, start chaining until you reach the desired height of the pillow and use the same color yarn (A) until one third of the pillow width is reached. Then count the rows and use the same number of rows for the two other colors (B and C).

Pattern

The front side

Start with any number of ch until you reach the desired length (the height of the pillow) + 2 using yarn A. For my pillow I chained 44 + 2.

Row 1: Yarn A: hdc-slst in the third ch from your hook, then hdc-slst in every ch until you reach the end.

Row 2-18: ch 2, hdc-slst-blo in every st of the prev row (ch 2 does not count as a st).

Row 19-36: Change to yarn B and repeat row 2.

Row 37-54: Change to yarn C and repeat row 2.

Fasten off and weave in the ends.

The back side

The back side is exactly the same as the front side.

Connecting two pieces

Put both pieces together so that the colors would match. Start with yarn A where color A and B meet.

Round 1:

– sc in every row of both pieces until you reach the first corner.

– 3 sc in the corner, then sc in every st of both pieces until you reach the corner.

– 3 sc in the corner, sc in every row of both pieces until you reach color B.

– Change yarn to B, sc in every row of both pieces until you reach color C.

– Change yarn to C, sc in every row of both pieces until you reach the corner,

– 3 sc in the corner, sc in every st of both pieces until you reach the corner,

– 3 sc in the corner, sc in every row of both pieces until you reach color B (don’t forget to put your pillow or stuffing inside before you end the row!).

– Change yarn to B and sc in every row of both pieces until you reach color A.

– Change to yarn A and connect with a sl st.

Changing yarn color

1a. When you need yarn color (B) to start from the next row, finish the current row with yarn color (A).

2a. Yarn over yarn color B.

3a. Pull the yarn color B through the loop on your hook. Now yarn color B is ready to use.

1b. When you need to change yarn color B to yarn color A working on the edge, make single crochets with yarn color B until only one stitch in that color is left to make.

2b. Start making the last single crochet with yarn color B: insert the hook in the next stitch, yarn over, pull the yarn through. You have two loops on your hook. Now stop.

3b. Yarn over yarn color A.

4b. Pull the yarn through both loops. Now yarn color A is ready to use.

Connecting two pieces

1. To connect two pieces, first put them together. Insert your hook in the first stitch of the first piece and the first stitch of the second piece. Your hook should be under both “v”s.

2. Yarn over.

3. Pull the yarn through both “v”s. Now you have two loops on your hook.

4. Yarn over.

5. Pull the yarn through both loops.

6. Continue making single crochets in the same way until you need to change the yarn color or until the end of the round. Then make the second round. Done!

Materials

• Yarn: any dk or worsted yarn will work. I used 100 g (260 m) “Big Acrylic” gradient yarn from a local shop.
• Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 4.0.

Abbreviations (US terms)

• ch: chain
• dc: double crochet
• rnd: round
• prev: previous
• st: stitch
• sl st: slip stitch
• dc-blo: double crochet in the back loop only
• hdc-blo: half double crochet in the back loop only
• dc-3lo: double crochet in the third loop only

Notes

You will be working in rounds. You can repeat rnd 2-3 until you reach the desired height of your pillow. I repeated 13 times. The size of my pillow is 30×26 cm.

Pattern

Start with chaining until you reach the desired length (the width of the pillow) + 3. For my mini pillow I chained 52 + 3.

Round 1: dc in the 4th ch from the hook and in each ch till the end of the row. Now we will continue the rnd: dc one more in the last ch, turn around and continue with dc down the chain until the end. dc one more in the last ch, connect with a sl st.

Round 2: ch 2, hdc-blo in every st of the prev rnd. Connect with a sl st.

Round 3: ch 3, dc-3lo in every st of the prev rnd. Connect with a sl st.

Round 4-29: repeat rnd 2-3 13 times.

Round 30: ch 3, dc-blo in every st of the prev rnd, connect with a sl st.

Put your pillow (or stuffing) inside your pillow cover. To close sl st through both opposite stitches of each side until you reach the end. Fasted off and weave in the ends.

Starting the pillow

1. Start with a chain.

2. Make double crochets until the end of the row. Don’t turn around your work as usually.

3. Make one more double crochet in the end of the row.

4. Make one more double crochet in the same chain (in total you have three now).

5. Continue by working around the chain. Make double crochets in each chain until the end of the row.

6. This is how it looks at the end of the row.

7. Make one more double crochet in the last stitch.

8. Connect the last double crochet to the first one with a slip stitch. You have just finished round one.

9. This is how your work looks after a few rounds.

Closing the pillow

1. To close the pillow, insert the hook in the first stitch that is closer to you grabbing only the back loop of the stitch. Then insert the hook in the first stitch that is further from you grabbing the front loop of the stitch, like it is shown in the photo.

2. Yarn over.

3. Pull the yarn through both stitches. Now you have two loops on your hook.

4. Pull the first loop through the second. Now you have one loop on your hook and you have just finished the first slip stitch.

5. Continue making slip stitches until you completely close the pillow.

6. Fasten off and weave in the ends. Done!
