In this free step-by-step crochet stitch tutorial I show how to make the column and fan stitch. This stitch is a lacy crochet stitch. The fabric turns out light and breathable. It works great for shawls and wraps, lightweight scarves, lacy crochet summer tops and tanks, lightweight blankets and other summer crochet projects.
This crochet stitch tutorial includes photo instructions and a video tutorial (see below). The column and fan stitch is a repeat of two rows. For this crochet stitch you should know how to make double crochet. It is easy to make and suitable for beginners.
Materials and tools
Yarn: For this tutorial I use Soft FRAYA Cotton 8/4 100% Organic cotton 50g – 180 m yarn, color: dusty pink. However, you can use your favorite yarn depending on the crochet project.
Hook: I use a 2.0 mm hook. If you are using a different yarn, choose the hook size that is recommended on your yarn label.

Row 1
1. Start by chaining a multiple of eight plus five. You will start working in the fourth chain from your hook.
2. So, make a double crochet in the fourth chain from your hook.
3. Make one more double crochet in the next stitch.
4. Skip two stitches and make a double crochet.
5. Chain three.
6. Then make a double crochet in the same stitch where you have just worked in.
7. Skip two stitches and make a double crochet.
8. Make two more double crochets in the next two stitches.
9. Skip two stitches and make a double crochet in the next stitch.
10. Chain three.
11. Make another double crochet in the same stitch where you have just worked in.
12. Skip two stitches and make three double crochets in the next three stitches.
13. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row. The row should end with three double crochets.
Row 2
14. Chain three and turn your work around. Chain three counts as a stitch.
15. Make a double crochet in the second double crochet of the previous row.
16. Then make a double crochet in the next stitch.
17. Make five double crochets in the chain three space.
18. Skip one stitch and make three double crochets in the three double crochets of the previous row.
19. Then make five double crochets in the chain three space.
20. Skip one stitch and make three double crochets in the next three stitches.
21. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.
22. At the end of the row make the last double crochet in the turning chain.
Row 3
23. Chain three and turn your work around. Chain three counts as a stitch.
24. Make a double crochet in the second double crochet of the previous row.
25. Make another double crochet in the next stitch.
26. Skip two stitches and make a double crochet in the next stitch.
27. Chain three.
28. Then make another double crochet in the same stitch where you have just worked in.
29. Skip two stitches and make three double crochets in the next three stitches.
30. Skip two stitches and in the next stitch make a double crochet, chain three and one more double crochet.
31. Skip two stitches and make three double crochets in the next three stitches.
32. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.
33. At the end of the row make the last double crochet in the turning chain. For the rest of the pattern repeat rows 2-3.
Finished column and fan stitch
34. Done!
