Materials

• Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used Hjertegarn DIAMOND mercerized cotton 8/4, 50 g = 165 m, colors: 201 (white), 4950 (linen).
• Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 2.0.

Abbreviations (US terms)

• st: stitch
• ch: chain
• sc: single crochet
• dc: double crochet
• prev: previous
• rep * *: repeat from * to *

Notes

The size of my coaster is 8.5 x 8.5 cm. This pattern uses the block stitch. Photo instructions below show the main steps how to make this stitch. It is a repeat of two rows. The size of the coaster can be easily adjusted by chaining more or less in the beginning (keep in mind that it should be multiples of three plus one chain) and repeating rows 2 and 3 until you will form a nice rectangle (finish with a row of double crochets).

Pattern

Start by chaining 28 with the linen yarn (you can adjust the size by chaining more or less, but it should be multiples of three plus one chain).

Row 1: dc in the 4th ch from your hook, dc in every st until the end of the row.

Change yarn to white and cut the linen yarn.

Row 2: ch 1 (does not count as a st), sc in between the 1st and the 2nd dc of the prev row, *ch 2, skip 3 dc, sc in between the two dc*, rep ** until the end of the row. At the end of the row make the last sc in the turning chain space.

Change yarn to linen and cut the white yarn.

Row 3: ch 3 (counts as a st), *3 dc in the next ch2 space*, rep ** until the end of the row. At the end of the row dc in the last st.

Row 4-17: repeat row 2 and row 3. Remember to change yarn color when you finish each row.

Fasten off.

Row 1

1. Start by chaining 28. You will work in the fourth chain from your hook.

2. So, make a double crochet in the fourth chain from your hook.

3. Continue making double crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

4. At the end of the row you have to change yarn color to white. So, chain one with the white yarn.

5. Then pull the end of the linen yarn to tighten and secure the white yarn. The white yarn is ready to use.

Row 2

6. Chain one and turn your work around. Chain one does not count as a stitch. You will make a single crochet in between the first two stitches.

7. So, insert your hook in between the first two double crochets and yarn over.

8. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

9. Yarn over.

10. Pull the yarn through both loops.

11. Chain two.

12. Skip three double crochets and make a single crochet in between the two double crochets.

13. Then repeat: chain two, skip three double crochets and make a single crochet in between the two double crochets.

14. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row. At the end of the row chain two as usually.

15. Then make a single crochet in the turning chain space.

16. Change yarn color to linen.

Row 3

17. Chain three and turn your work around. Chain three counts as a stitch.

18. Make a double crochet in the chain two space.

19. Make two more double crochets in the same chain two space.

20. Then make three double crochets in the next chain two space.

21. Continue making three double crochets in every chain two space until the end of the row.

22. At the end of the row make a double crochet in the last stitch. For the rest of the pattern repeat rows 2-3 changing yarn color every row.
