In this step-by-step crochet tutorial I show how to make the side saddle stitch. This is not a very complicated stitch and it looks so beautiful! It is a reversible crochet stitch and it looks the same on both sides. It is a repeat of two rows. The side saddle crochet stitch consists of chains, single crochets, double crochets and double crochets four together. The photo tutorial below shows how to make a double crochet four together.
For this tutorial I use Hjertegarn DIAMOND mercerized cotton 100% 8/4 50g, color: 361 (grey), and a 2.0 mm hook.

Photo instructions for the side saddle crochet stitch
Row 1

1. Start by chaining a multiple of five plus two. You will work in the second chain from your hook.

2. So, make a single crochet in the second chain from your hook.

3. Chain three. Next you will make a double crochet four together working in the next four stitches.

4. So, yarn over.

5. Insert your hook in the next chain and yarn over.

6. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

7. Yarn over.

8. Pull the yarn through the first two loops. Now you have two loops on your hook. The first leg of the double crochet four together is ready.

9. Yarn over.

10. Insert your hook in the next stitch and yarn over.

11. Pull the yarn through. Now you have four loops on your hook.

12. Yarn over.

13. Pull the yarn through the first two loops. Now you have three loops on your hook. The second leg is ready.

14. Yarn over.

15. Insert your hook in the next stitch and yarn over.

16. Pull the yarn through. Now you have five loops on your hook.

17. Yarn over.

18. Pull the yarn through the first two loops. Now you have four loops on your hook. The third leg is ready.

19. Yarn over.

20. Insert your hook in the next stitch and yarn over.

21. Pull the yarn through. Now you have six loops on your hook.

22. Yarn over.

23. Pull the yarn through the first two loops. Now you have five loops on your hook. The fourth leg is ready.

24. Yarn over.

25. Pull the yarn through all five loops. You have just made a double crochet four together!

26. Chain one.

27. Then make a single crochet in the next stitch.

28. Chain three.

29. Make another double crochet four together working in the next four stitches.

30. Chain one.

31. Make a single crochet in the next stitch.

32. Then repeat: chain three, make a double crochet four together working in the next four stitches, chain one and make a single crochet in the next stitch.

33. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row. The row should end with a single crochet.
Row 2

34. Chain four and turn your work around.

35. Make a single crochet in the double crochet four together of the previous row.

36. Chain three. Next you will make a double crochet four together working in the chain three space.

37. So, make the first leg. Now you have two loops on your hook.

38. Make the second leg. Now you have three loops on your hook.

39. Make the third leg. Now you have four loops on your hook.

40. Make the fourth leg. Now you have five loops on your hook.

41. Yarn over and pull the yarn through all five loops.

42. Chain one.

43. Make a single crochet in the double crochet four together of the previous row.

44. Then repeat. Chain three.

45. Make a double crochet four together working in the chain three space.

46. Chain one.

47. Make a single crochet in the double crochet four together of the previous row.

48. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row. At the end of the row chain one as usually.

49. Then make a double crochet in the last stitch.
Row 3

50. Chain one and turn your work around. Chain one does not count as a stitch.

51. Make a single crochet in the double crochet four together of the previous row.

52. Chain three.

53. Make a double crochet four together in the chain three space.

54. Chain one.

55. Make a single crochet in the double crochet four together.

56. Then repeat: chain three, make a double crochet four together in the chain three space, chain one and make a single crochet in the double crochet four together.

57. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row. At the end of the row chain one as usually.

58. Then make a single crochet in the third chain of the turning chain. For the rest of the pattern repeat rows 2-3.
Finished side saddle stitch
