Crochet cowl Primrose

Here is a free pattern for a very simple crochet cowl Primrose. This project is suitable for beginners as the primrose stitch that I use for this cowl is quite easy to make. If you have never tried it, here is a photo tutorial. Also, photo instructions below will help you along.

For my cowl I used 100% polyester yarn that is a product of recycling. I like the idea that some old plastic bottles were transformed into this yarn and now it is a beautiful cowl!

I hope that you will enjoy making and then wearing this crochet cowl 🙂 You can also take a look at my other patterns for scarves: an infinity scarf Calypso and a chunky infinity scarf.

Good luck!

Notes

The size of my cowl is 60.0 x 22.0 cm. Photo instructions below show the main steps how to make the cowl. For this cowl I use the primrose stitch, which is a repeat of two rounds and consists only of chains, single crochets and double crochets.

Pattern

Start by chaining multiples of three until you reach the length of 60 cm with the rose yarn. I chained 40 x 3 = 120. Then join to the beginning of the chain with a sl st (make sure that the chain is not twisted before you join).

Round 1: ch 2, *skip two st, make a sc, ch 2, make a sc in the same st*, rep * * until the end of the round, join with a sl st to the ch2 that you made in the beginning of this round.

Round 2: ch 3, *make 3 dcs in the chain 2 space of the previous round*, rep * * until the end of the round, join with a sl st to the ch3.

Round 3: ch 2, *make a sc in the middle dc (out of three dcs) in the previous round, ch 2, make a sc in the same st*, rep * * until the end of the round, join with a sl st to the ch2.

Rounds 4-30: For the rest of the pattern repeat round 2 and round 3.

Changing colors: Round 1-2 rose, rounds 3-4 white, rounds 5-26 rose, rounds 27-28 white, rounds 29-30 rose.

Photo instructions

Joining the ends of chain

1. Chain multiples of three until you reach 60 cm length.

2. Before joining your long chain to its beginning, remember to check if it is not twisted. Then insert your hook in the first chain.

3. Yarn over.

4. Pull the yarn through. Now you will start working in rounds.

Round 1

5. Chain two.

6. Skip two stitches and make a single crochet in the back of the chain.

7. Chain two.

8. Make another single crochet in the same stitch.

9. Skip two stitches and make a single crochet.

10. Chain two.

11. Then make a single crochet in the same stitch.

12. Continue working in the same way until the end of the round: skip two stitches, make a single crochet, chain two and then make another single crochet in the same stitch.

13. In the end the round join with a slip stitch to the chain two that you made in the beginning of this round.

Round 2

14. Chain three.

15. Then make a double crochet in the chain two space of the previous round (in between two single crochets in the previous round).

16. Make two more double crochets in the same chain two space (now in total you have three double crochets).

17. Next make three double crochets in the next chain two space.

18. Continue working in the same way until the end of the round.

19. When you reach the end of the round, join with a slip stitch to the chain three that you made in the beginning of the round.

Round 3

20. In round 3 you have to change yarn color. So, take the white yarn and chain one.

21. Then tighten it up by pulling the end of the rose yarn. The white yarn is ready to use.

22. Chain two.

23. Then make a single crochet in the middle double crochet out of three double crochets in the previous round.

24. Chain two.

25. Make a single crochet in the same stitch.

26. Then skip two stitches and make a single crochet in the middle double crochet of the previous round, chain two and make a single crochet in the same stitch.

27. Work in same way until the end of the round.

28. Then join with a slip stitch to the chain two that you made in the beginning of this round.

Round 4

29. For the rest of the pattern repeat rounds 2 and 3. Remember to change yarn color as needed.
