Primrose stitch

In this tutorial I show how to make the primrose stitch working in rows. The primrose stitch requires to know how to make a chain, a single crochet, a half double crochet and a double crochet. It is an easy stitch because you just have to repeat two rows.

The primrose crochet stitch can be reversible: it looks a bit different on each side, but both sides are beautiful.

Photo instructions for the primrose crochet stitch

Row 1

1. Start with a chain of multiples of three plus two. I chained 8 x 3 + 2 = 26. You will start working in the third chain from your hook in the back of the chain like it is shown in the picture.

2. So, make a single crochet in the third chain from your hook.

3. Then chain two.

4. Next make a single crochet in the same stitch where you made your first single crochet.

5. Then skip two stitches and make a single crochet.

6. Chain two.

7. Then make a single crochet in the same stitch. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.

8. When you reach the end of the row, you will have to skip one stitch and work in the very last stitch.

9. So, in the last stitch of the row make a half double crochet.

Row 2

10. Chain three (it counts as a double crochet stitch).

11. Turn your work around. Now you will be working in the chain two space (in between two single crochets in the previous row) like it is shown in the picture.

12. So, make a double crochet in the chain two space.

13. Then make the second double crochet in the same chain two space.

14. And then make the third double crochet in the same chain two space.

15. Until the end of the row you will have to make three double crochets in each chain two space.

16. When you reach the end of the row, make a double crochet in the turning chain two of the previous row.

Row 3

17. Chain two.

18. Turn your work around. You will be working in the third stitch of this row (in the middle double crochet out of three double crochets in the previous row).

19. So, make a single crochet.

20. Chain two.

21. Then make a single crochet in the same stitch. Keep working in the same way until the end of the row: skip two stitches, make a single crochet, chain two and make another single crochet in the same stitch.

22. When you reach the end of the row, make a half double crochet in the turning chain three of the previous row. Then chain three.

Row 4

23. For the rest of the pattern repeat rows 2 and 3.

The “good” side of the primrose stitch

24. This is how the “good” side of the primrose stitch looks like after a few rows.

The “bad” side of the primrose stitch

25. The “bad” side of the primrose stitch looks great too.
