Crochet crunch stitch coaster

Are you looking for a quick and simple project? If yes, this crochet crunch stitch coaster is a great option. I really like the texture of this stitch and it is so easy to make! I think that it is great for beginners or for those who just want to try out the crunch stitch.

When I finished making my coaster, I decided that I will make a bigger version, which will serve as a dishcloth. If you would like to make one too, remember to use cotton yarn because it absorbs water much better.

Also, I have a couple of different patterns for coasters, so you can take a look at my tapestry crochet coaster, winter coaster, Christmas coaster or spider coasters.

Good luck!

Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used Järbo 8/4 100% Cotton “Mercerized & Gassed” 50 g (offwhite and light gray)
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 2.0.

Notes

The size of my crochet crunch stitch coaster is 10.2 x 10.2 cm.

In the beginning you will be working in rows. For this coaster I use the crunch stitch. If you are not familiar with this stitch, you can take a look at the tutorial (here) or at the photo instructions below. To make a nice edge, you will be working in rounds.

You can easily adjust the size of your coaster by making a shorter or a longer chain in the beginning, but remember to make an even number of chains. Then make as many rows as needed to get a square.

Pattern

Start by chaining 24 with white yarn.

Row 1-24: crunch stitch (see photo instruction below)

Round 1: Ch 1. 1 sc in every st or 1 sc the side of every row if it is the side of the square, 3 sc in each corner. At the end of the round join with a sl st.

Change to gray yarn (ch 1 with your gray yarn and pull the white yarn to secure the gray one).

Round 2: Ch 1. 1 sc in every st, 3 sc in each corner. Join with a sl st.

Fasten off.

Photo instructions for the crochet crunch stitch coaster

Row 1

1. Start with an even number of chains. You will start working in the second chain from your hook like it is shown in the picture.

2. So, make a slip stitch (sl st) in the second chain from your hook.

3. Then make a half double crochet in the next stitch.

4. After that make a sl st in the next st.

5. And then make a half double crochet in the next stitch.

6. Keep making sl stitches and a half double crochets until the end of the row. The last st of the row will be a sl st.

Row 2

7. Chain two and turn around your work. Ch2 counts as a half double crochet. Now skip the very first st and make a sl st in the second st of the row like it is shown in the picture. (For the crunch stitch you always make a half double crochet in the sl st of the previous row, and a sl st in the half double crochet of the previous row.)

8. Next you will have to make a half double crochet in the next st. Notice that some stitches of the previous row are “upward sloping” (the sl st of the previous row) and some are “downward sloping” (the half double crochet of the previous row). Always make a half double crochet in the “upward sloping” stitch and a sl st in the “downward sloping” stitch.

9. So, you have just made a half double crochet. Now make a sl st in the next st which is “downward sloping”. Keep making half double crochets and slip stitches until the end of the row. Notice that if you start the row with a sl st, you end it with a sl st too. And vice versa, if you start the row by chaining two (which counts as a half double crochet), you will end it with a half double crochet.

Row 3

10. For the third row chain one and make a sl st in the very first stitch of the row like it is shown in the picture.

11. Then make a half double crochet in the next st.

Row 24

12. Keep working in the same way until you get a square.

Round 1

13. Now you will be working in rounds. Ch1 and make sc in the side of every row like it is shown in the picture.

14. Continue making sc until the end of this side of the coaster.

15. Then make 3 sc in the corner. Continue making sc in every st until you reach another corner, 3 sc in the corner. Continue working in the same way until the end of the round. Join with a sl st.

Round 2

16. Now take your gray yarn.

17. Ch 1 with your gray yarn.

18. Pull the white yarn to secure the gray yarn.

19. Ch 1 and make sc in every st until you reach a corner.

20. 3 sc in the corner. Continue making sc in every st. Work in the same way until the end of the round. Join with a sl st and fasten off.
