Crochet stitch tutorial: Crunch stitch

Crunch stitch

In this tutorial I show how to make this simple crunch stitch which has a very nice texture. The crunch stitch is beginner friendly and only requires to know how to make a chain, a slip stitch (sl st) and a half double crochet (hdc). To make this stitch, you just need to alternate slip stitches and half double crochets. It cannot be more simple! 🙂

For this tutorial I use Hjertegarn Diamond mercerized cotton 8/4, 50 g = 165 m, color: 4950 (linen), and a 2.0 mm hook.

Photo instructions for the crunch stitch

Row 1

1. Start by chaining an even number of chains. You will work in the second chain from your hook.

2. You will make a slip stitch. So, insert your hook in the second chain and yarn over.

3. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

4. Pull the first loop through the second one. You have just made a slip stitch!

5. Make a half double crochet in the next stitch.

6. Then make a slip stitch in the next stitch.

7. Make a half double crochet in the next stitch.

8. Then repeat: make a slip stitch and then make a half double crochet.

9. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row. The row should end with a slip stitch.

Row 2

10. Chain two and turn your work around. Chain two counts as a stitch (as a half double crochet).

11. Make a slip stitch in the second stitch. Notice that the next stitch is upwards sloping and the next one is downwards sloping.

12. Always make a half double crochet in the upwards sloping stitch and a slip stitch in the downwards sloping stitch. So, make a half double crochet.

13. Make a slip stitch in the next stitch.

14. Make a half double crochet in the next stitch.

15. Then make a slip stitch in the next stitch.

16. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row. The row should end with a half double crochet.

Row 3

17. Chain one and turn your work around. Chain one does not count as a stitch.

18. Make a slip stitch in the very first stitch.

19. Make a half double crochet in the next stitch.

20. Then repeat. Make a slip stitch in the next stitch.

21. Make a half double crochet in the next stitch.

22. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row. The row should end with a slip stitch. For the rest of the pattern repeat rows 2-3.

Finished crunch stitch

23. Done!
