Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used Järbo 8/4 100% Cotton “Mercerized & Gassed” 50 g (offwhite and linen).
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 2.0.

Notes

The size of my crochet zipper pouch for headphones is 8.5 x 7.5 cm. You will be working in rounds. This pattern uses the modified alternating single crochet spike stitch. Photo instructions below show the main steps how to make this stitch. The pattern is a repeat of two rounds. It is very easy to adjust the size of the pouch: in the beginning make any number of chains to reach the desired width of your pouch. Then make any number of rounds until you reach the desired height.

Pattern

Start by chaining 22 with the linen yarn.

Round 1: To make the first round, you will be working down the chain, then turn and work on the other side of the chain. Make sc in every st of the chain starting from the second chain from your hook. Join with a sl st to the first sc of this round. In total you should have 44 st.

Photo instructions for a crochet zipper pouch for headphones Emma

1. Make 22 chains with the linen yarn. You will start working in the second chain from your hook like it is shown in the picture.

Round 1

2. So, make a single crochet in the second chain from your hook.

3. Continue making single crochets until the end of the row.

4. Turn your work and make a single crochet in the end of the chain.

5. Then make single crochets in every stitch starting with the one you have just worked into; now that stitch has 3 single crochets in total.

6. Keep making single crochets until you come back to the beginning of the chain.

7. Then make one single crochet in the end of the chain.

8. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet of this round. In total you should have 44 stitches.

Round 2

9. Chain one. It counts as the first stitch.

10. Now you will be working in the back loop only.

11. So, make a single crochet back loop only in the next stitch.

12. Keep making single crochets back loop only in every stitch until the end of the round. Remember that you should have 44 stitches in each round.

13. To join with a slip stitch, insert your hook in the chain that you made in the beginning of this round.

14. Then yarn over and pull the yarn through.

Round 3

15. Chain one (it counts as a stitch).

16. Make a single crochet back loop only in the next stitch. Then you will have to make a single crochet spike stitch. To do that, you will have to insert your hook under the next single crochet back loop only of the previous round like it is indicated in the picture.

17. So, insert your hook under the next stitch.

18. Then yarn over.

19. Pull the yarn through. Make sure that the loop that you are making would be tall enough to be even with the first loop on your hook.

20. Yarn over.

21. Pull the yarn through. You have just made a single crochet spike stitch.

22. Then make a single crochet back loop only in the next stitch.

23. Make a single crochet spike stitch in the next stitch.

24. Keep alternating single crochets back loop only and single crochet spike stitches until the end of the round. Your last stitch in this round should be a single crochet back loop only.

25. To join with a slip stitch, insert your hook in the chain one that you made in the beginning of this round.

26. Yarn over and pull the yarn through.

Round 4

27. Chain one (it counts as a stitch). In this round you will have to make a single crochet spike stitch in the single crochet back loop only of the previous round and a single crochet back loop only in the single crochet spike stitch of the previous round.

28. So, make a single crochet spike stitch in the next stitch.

29. Then make a single crochet back loop only in the next stitch.

30. Keep alternating single crochets back loop only and single crochet spike stitches until the end of the round.

31. The last stitch in this round should be a single crochet spike stitch.

32. Then join with a slip stitch to the chain that you made in the beginning of this round.

33. This is how the modified alternating spike stitch looks like after a few rounds.

Round 19

34. In round 19 you have to change yarn color. So, take your offwhite yarn.

35. Then chain one with the offwhite yarn.

36. Pull the end of the linen yarn to secure the offwhite yarn. Then chain one with the offwhite yarn again.

37. Keep working as usually, i.e. make a single crochet back loop only in the next stitch.

38. Keep alternating single crochets back loop only and single crochet spike stitches. Follow the rest of the pattern and remember to change yarn color in round 22.
