In this free step-by-step crochet tutorial I show how to make the floret stitch. This stitch is a solid, textured crochet stitch. It creates dense, durable fabric and works great for washcloths, blankets, scarves, hats, cardigans, crochet tops and other projects that need structure and durability.

This crochet stitch tutorial includes detailed photo instructions. The floret stitch is a repeat of two rows. For this crochet stitch you should know how to make double crochet. It is very easy to make and suitable for beginners.

Materials and tools

Yarn: For this tutorial I use Hjertegarn DIAMOND mercerized cotton 8/4, 50 g = 165 m, color: 706 (sea green). However, you can use your favorite yarn depending on the crochet project.

Hook: I use a 2.0 mm hook. If you are using a different yarn, choose the hook size that is recommended on your yarn label.

Photo instructions for the floret crochet stitch

Row 1

1. Start by chaining an odd number of chains. You will start working in the fourth chain from your hook.

2. So, make a double crochet in the fourth chain from your hook.

3. Then make another double crochet in the next stitch.

4. Continue making double crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

Row 2

5. Chain one and turn your work around. Chain one does not count as a stitch.

6. Next you will make a slip stitch in the very first stitch. So, insert your hook in the first stitch and yarn over.

7. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

8. Pull the first loop through the second one. You have just made a slip stitch.

9. Make a double crochet in the next stitch.

10. Make a slip stitch in the next stitch.

11. Then repeat: make a double crochet in the next stitch and a slip stitch in the next one.

12. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.

13. At the end of the row make the last slip stitch in the turning chain.

Row 3

14. Chain three and turn your work around. Chain three counts as a stitch.

15. It might be difficult to see where the tops of stiches of the previous row are. If you would look on the other side, you could see them more clearly.

16. Make a double crochet in the second stitch.

17. Then make a double crochet in the next stitch.

18. Continue making double crochets in every stitch until the end of the row. For the rest of the pattern repeat rows 2-3.
