Tapestry crochet zipper pouch Moon

I am very happy to share a new free pattern for a tapestry crochet zipper pouch Moon. Some time ago I made a drawstring crochet bag with a moon, which some of you really liked. Therefore, I created a similar design for a zipper pouch. I hope that you will like it too 🙂

If you are a beginner in tapestry crochet, the first three rounds and the last three rounds might seem a bit tricky because you have to change yarn color quite often. If you feel that it is too complicated, alternatively you could make the first two rounds and the last two rounds all white. Other rounds would be blue, except where you make the moon. I have included the rules, explaining how to change yarn color, as well as detailed photo instructions. I hope that this will help you along the way. And if you have any questions, you can always contact me here on the blog or on social media.

If you are not sure how to sew in a zipper and attach lining, you can take a look at a tutorial here.

Good luck!

Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used Strik & Smil “Art silk garn”, 100% viscose, 50 g (~140m), colors: white and blue.
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 2.0.

Notes

The size of my pouch is 13.0 x 9.5 cm. You will be working in rounds. For this pattern you should be familiar with tapestry crochet (you can find the tutorial here), The photo instructions below show the main steps how to make a pouch. This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, but instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial here). Except for the first round, every round is made in the same way: chain one, make 71 modified single crochets, join with a slip stitch. Follow the color chart showing how you should change colors.

Pattern

Start by chaining 36 with white yarn.

Round 1: To make the first round, you will be working down the chain, then turn and work on the other side of the chain. Make sc in every st of the chain starting from the second chain from your hook. Turn. 1 sc in the end of the chain, make sc in every st (starting with the one you have just worked into; now that st has 3 sc in total) until you come back to the beginning of the chain. 1 sc in the end of the chain. Join with a sl st to the first sc of this round. In total you should have 72 st.

Add your blue yarn like it is shown in the photo instructions below. Follow the color chart for all the rounds until the end.

Round 2-24: ch 1, msc in every st of the previous round. Join with a sl st.

Fasten off and sew in a zipper.

Color chart for the crochet zipper pouch Moon

How to read the chart

Each square represents a stitch and its color. In each round you have 72 stitches. Rows represent rounds. For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left. The chain that you make in the beginning of each round counts as a stitch.

Below you can find a zoomed in color chart which starts from column 37.

Rules for changing color

The last msc of the round

Finish making your last msc of the round with the same color yarn as the first st of the round. For example, round 2 ends with a blue st and starts with a white st, Therefore, finish the last st of round 2 with the white yarn. Round 3 ends with a blue st and starts with a blue st too, therefore, finish the last msc of round 3 with the blue yarn.

The slip stitch

The color of a sl st depends on the color of the first st in the next round. For example, round 22 ends with a blue st and round 23 starts with a white st. Therefore, you should make a sl st in round 22 with the white yarn.

See photo instructions below showing how to change color.

Photo instructions for the crochet zipper pouch Moon

Round 1

1. Start by chaining 36.

2. Make a single crochet in the second chain from your hook.

3. Continue making single crochets until the end of the chain.

4. Then make one single crochet in the end of the chain.

5. Turn your work and make one more single crochet in the same stitch.

6. Then continue making single crochets in every stitch until you reach the end.

7. Make one single crochet in the end of the chain. In total you should have 72 stitches.

8. To join with a slip stitch, insert your hook in the first single crochet of this round.

9. Yarn over and pull the yarn through.

Round 2

10. Chain one.

11. Then insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop.

12. Yarn over.

13. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

14. Next, take the blue yarn and put it behind your hook and in front of the white yarn like it is shown in the picture.

15. Then yarn under the white yarn.

16. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. You have just made a modified single crochet. Notice that the blue yarn is wrapped around with the white yarn.

17. Then insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop.

18. Yarn over the white yarn and pull it through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

19. The fourth stitch in this round should be blue, therefore you have to finish the third stitch with the blue yarn. So, put the blue yarn up.

20. Yarn under the blue yarn.

21. Pull the yarn though both loops on your hook. Now the blue yarn is ready to use.

22. The fifth stitch in this round should be white again. Therefore, start making the fourth stitch with the blue yarn and stop when you have two loops on your hook.

23. Then put the white yarn up and yarn under.

24. Pull the yarn through. Now your white yarn is ready to use.

25. The last stitch in round 2 is blue. So, start making it with the blue yarn and stop when you have two loops on your hook. Now you need to check what color was the first stitch in this round. It was white, therefore, you will have to finish the last stitch in this round with the white yarn.

26. So, put the white yarn up, yarn under and pull the yarn through both loops. Now you are ready to join with a slip stitch.

27. Insert your hook in the first stitch of this round (a chain). Now you need to check what color is the first stitch of the next round, i.e. round 3. It is blue. This means that you have to make a slip stitch with the blue yarn.

28. So, put the blue yarn up, yarn over and pull the yarn through.

Round 3

29. In round 3 the first stitch should be blue and the second stitch should be white. Therefore, make a chain with the white yarn (it will become the top of your second stitch).

30. Start making the second stitch with the white yarn and stop when you have two loops on your hook because the third stitch in this round should be blue and you have to change color.

31. So, finish the second stitch with the blue yarn.

32. Keep following the color chart and change colors accordingly.

33. At the end of round, finish the last blue stitch with the blue yarn because the first stitch in this round is blue.

34. To join with a slip stitch, insert your hook in the blue stitch. The first stitch in round 4 is blue, therefore, make a slip stitch with the blue yarn.

35. The next rounds, until round 22, are quite straightforward. For the the last 3 rounds follow the same rules for changing yarn color.
