The aligned cobble stitch

In this free step-by-step crochet stitch tutorial I show how to make the aligned cobble stitch. This stitch is a solid, textured crochet stitch. It creates dense, durable fabric and works great for potholders, washcloths, decorative pillow covers, bags, blankets, scarves and other projects that need warmth, structure, and durability.

This crochet stitch tutorial includes photo instructions and a video tutorial (see below). The aligned cobble stitch is a two-row repeat. For this crochet stitch you should know how to make single crochet and treble crochet. This stitch is very easy to make and suitable for beginners.

Video tutorial

The video tutorial below shows how to make the aligned cobble crochet stitch.

Photo instructions for the aligned cobble stitch

Row 1

1. Start by chaining an even number of chains. You will start working in the second chain from your hook.

2. So, make a single crochet in the second chain from your hook.

3. Continue making single crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

4. At the end of the row chain one.

Row 2

5. Turn your work around. Chain one does not count as a stitch. You will start working in the first stitch.

6. So, make a single crochet in the first stitch.

7. Then make a treble crochet in the next stitch.

8. Make a single crochet in the next stitch. The treble crochet that you have just made should bend and pop out on the other side of your work.

9. Then make a treble crochet in the next stitch.

10. Make a single crochet in the next stitch. Then repeat: make a treble crochet in the next stitch and a single crochet in the next one.

11. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row. The row should end with a single crochet.

12. At the end of the row chain one.

Row 3

13. Turn your work around. Chain one does not count as a stitch. You will start working in the first stitch. Notice how treble crochets from the previous row form little bumps on this side.

14. So, make a single crochet in the first stitch.

15. It might be hard to see stitches on this side, so you can tilt your work to see the stitches better on the other side.

16. Make a single crochet in the next stitch.

17. Continue making single crochets in every stitch until the end of the row. The last stitch should be made in the single crochet of the previous row. For the rest of the pattern repeat rows 2 and 3.
