The spiked diagonal puff stitch

In this step-by-step crochet tutorial I show how to make the spiked diagonal puff crochet stitch. For this stitch you should know how to make a single, a double crochet. All other steps are shown in great detail in the photo instructions below. The spiked diagonal puff crochet stitch is a repeat of two rows and it looks a bit different on each side.

For this tutorial I use Soft FRAYA Cotton 8/4 100% Organic cotton 50g – 180 m yarn, color: sand, and a 2.0 mm hook.

Photo instructions for the spiked diagonal puff crochet stitch

Row 1

1. Start by chaining multiples of four plus two. You will start working in the second chain from your hook.

2. So, make a single crochet in the second chain from your hook.

3. Continue making single crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

4. At the end of the row chain three.

Row 2

5. Turn your work around. Chain three counts a stitch, so you will start working in the second stitch.

6. So, make three double crochets in the next three stitches starting from the second stitch.

7. Now you will make a spiked diagonal puff stitch. You will have to work backwards – skip the two double crochets that you have just made and work in the same stitch where the third one is made. So, yarn over.

8. Insert your hook three stitches back and yarn over.

9. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

10. Yarn over.

11. Insert your hook in the same stitch again and yarn over.

12. Pull the yarn through. Now you have five loops on your hook.

13. Yarn over.

14. Insert your hook in the same stitch again and yarn over.

15. Pull the yarn through. Now you have seven loops on your hook.

16. Yarn over.

17. Pull the yarn through the first six loops on your hook. Now you have two loops on your hook.

18. Yarn over.

19. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. You have just made a spiked diagonal puff stitch! Next you will work in the next stitch, don’t skip any stitches from the previous row. This will give you some extra stitches in this row but you will reduce the number of stitches in the next row.

20. So, make four double crochets in the next four stitches. Next you will make another spiked diagonal puff stitch working three stitches back (work in the second double crochet out of four).

21. So, make a puff stitch in the same way as before.

22. Then make four double crochets in the next four stitches.

23. Then make another spiked diagonal puff stitch.

24. Keep working in the same way until the end of the row.

25. At the end of the row make a double crochet in the last stitch.

26. Then chain one.

Row 3

27. Turn your work around. Chain one does not count as a stitch, so you will start working in the very first stitch.

28. So, make a single crochet in the first stitch.

29. Then make another single crochet in the next stitch. Now you will have to skip one stitch to reduce the number of stitches in this row (by making puff stitches in the previous row the number of stitches increased).

30. So, skip one stitch and make four single crochets in the next four stitches.

31. Then skip one stitch again and make four single crochets in the next four stitches.

32. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row until you have four stitches left.

33. Then skip one stitch and make three single crochets in the last three stitches (the third single crochet should be made in the turning chain). For the rest of the pattern repeat rows 2-3.
