The Paris stitch

In this step-by-step crochet tutorial I show how to make the Paris crochet stitch. For this stitch you should know how to make a single and a double crochet. It is very easy to make and it is suitable for beginners. The Paris crochet stitch is a repeat of one row. This stitch is reversible and looks the same on both sides.

For this tutorial I use Soft FRAYA Cotton 8/4 100% Organic cotton 50g – 180 m yarn, colors: sand and eucalyptus, and a 2.0 mm hook.

If you prefer a printable version without ads, you can purchase my ad-free e-book Beautiful crochet stitches Volume 1 with 50 detailed tutorials. In addition to the photo instructions the tutorials also include a short written stitch pattern.

This stitch works great with multiple colors. You can change color as often as you wish. In the tutorial below I show how to change colors and how the stitch looks when you change colors every row or every second row. The picture below shows how it looks when you change color every second row.

Photo instructions for the Paris crochet stitch

Row 1

1. Start by chaining multiples of three plus one. You will start working in the fourth chain from your hook.

2. So, make a double crochet in the fourth chain from your hook.

3. Then chain two.

4. Make a single crochet in the same stitch where you have just made a double crochet. Then you will skip two stitches and make a cluster.

5. So, skip two stitches and make a double crochet in the next stitch.

6. Make the second double crochet in the same stitch.

7. Then chain two.

8. Make a single crochet in the same stitch where you have just worked in. You have just made a cluster of two double crochets, two chains and a single crochet.

9. Then skip two stitches and make another cluster of two double crochets, two chains and one single crochet in the next stitch.

10. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row until you have three chains left.

11. Then skip two stitches and make another cluster in the last stitch.

12. Then chain three.

Row 2

13. Turn your work around. Chain three counts as the first double crochet of a cluster. Next you will work in every chain two space of the previous row.

14. So, make a double crochet in the chain two space of the previous row.

15. Chain two.

16. Make a single crochet in the same chain two space. Next you will make a cluster in the next chain two space.

17. So, make two double crochets in the next chain two space.

18. Chain two.

19. Make a single crochet in the same chain two space.

20. Then make another cluster in the next chain two space.

21. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.

22. At the end of the row make a cluster in the last chain two space of the previous row. For the rest of the pattern repeat row 2.

Row 3

23. You can change colors every row, every second row, or as often as you wish. So, to change yarn color, chain one with the second color yarn.

24. Then pull the end of the first color yarn to tighten and secure the second color yarn. Now the second color yarn is ready to use.

25. Chain three.

26. Turn your work around. You will start working in the first chain two space of the previous row.

27. So, make a double crochet, chain two and make a single crochet in the first chain two space.

28. Then make another cluster in the next chain two space. Work in the same way until you reach the desired size of you work.
