In this free step-by-step crochet tutorial I show how to make the wide half double crochet. This stitch is a solid crochet stitch. It is also a reversible crochet stitch that looks the same on both sides. It creates dense, durable fabric and works great for potholders, washcloths, blankets, hats, scarves, cowls, and other projects that need warmth, structure, and durability.
This crochet stitch tutorial includes detailed photo instructions. The wide half double crochet is a one-row repeat. For this stitch you should know how to make half double crochet. It is very easy to make and suitable for beginners.

Materials and tools
Yarn: For this tutorial I use Soft FRAYA Cotton 8/4 100% Organic cotton 50g – 180 m yarn, color: dusty pink. However, you can use your favorite yarn depending on the crochet project.
Hook: I use a 2.0 mm hook. If you are using a different yarn, choose the hook size that is recommended on your yarn label.

Row 1

1. Start by chaining any number of chains. You will start working in the third chain from your hook.

2. So, make a half double crochet in the third chain from your hook.

3. Continue making half double crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

4. At the end of the row chain two.
Row 2

5. Turn your work around. Chain two counts as a stitch. From now on you will work in between the posts of the half double crochets in the previous row.

6. So, yarn over.

7. Insert your hook in between the posts of the first and the second half double crochet in the previous row (in the space below the third loop).

8. Yarn over.

9. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

10. Yarn over.

11. Pull the yarn through all three loops on your hook.

12. Then make another stitch in between the posts of the next two stitches.

13. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row. At the end of the row make the last wide half double crochet in between the last half double crochet and the turning chain. For the rest of the pattern repeat row 2.
