Waffle stitch

In this tutorial I show how to make the waffle stitch. For this crochet stitch you need to know how to make a double crochet. Photo instructions below show how to make a front post double crochet.

The waffle stitch is a repeat of two rows and it is a quite popular crochet stitch that has a very nice texture. It is great for blankets and scarfs, but there plenty of other projects where you could use this stitch.

If you want to make the waffle crochet stitch in rounds, you should work in a different way. When working in rounds, you will also use a a back post double crochet. You can see how to work in rounds here.

For this tutorial I use Soft FRAYA Cotton 8/4 100% Organic cotton 50g – 180 m yarn, color: blue agave, and a 2.0 mm hook.

Crochet stitch tutorial: Waffle stitch

Row 1

1. Start by chaining a multiple of three plus two. You will start working in the fourth chain from your hook.

2. So, make a double crochet in the fourth chain from your hook.

3. Continue making double crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

Row 2

4. Chain three and turn your work around. Chain three counts as a stitch. Next you will make a front post double crochet in the second stitch.

5. So, yarn over.

6. Insert your hook bringing the post of the second stitch to the front.

7. Yarn over.

8. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

9. Yarn over.

10. Pull the yarn through the first two loops. Now you have two loops on your hook.

11. Yarn over.

12. Pull the yarn through both loops. You have just made a front post double crochet.

13. Make a double crochet in the next stitch (in the third double crochet of the previous row).

14. Make another double crochet in the next stitch.

15. Make a front post double crochet in the next stitch.

16. Then make two double crochets in the next two stitches.

17. Make a front post double crochet in the next stitch.

18. Then repeat: make two double crochets and then make a front post double crochet.

19. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.

20. At the end of the row make a double crochet in the turning chain.

Row 3

21. Chain three and turn your work around. Chain three counts as a stitch.

22. Make a double crochet in the second stitch.

23. Then make a front post double crochet in the next stitch.

24. Make another front post double crochet in the next stitch.

25. Make a double crochet in the next stitch.

26. Then make two front post double crochets in the next two stitches.

27. Make a double crochet in the next stitch.

28. Then repeat: make two front post double crochets and then make a double crochet.

29. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.

30. At the end of the row make a double crochet in the turning chain.

Row 4

31. For the rest of the pattern repeat rows 2-3.

Finished waffle stitch

32. Done!
