Waffle stitch

In this tutorial I show how to make the waffle stitch working in rows and in rounds. If you want to make the waffle crochet stitch in rounds, you should work in a bit different way. Both ways are shown in the photo instructions below.

For this stitch you need to know how to make a chain, a double crochet and a front post double crochet (a back post double crochet too, if you are working in rounds). It is a repeat of two rows (or rounds) and each side of the work looks differently.

It is a quite popular crochet stitch that has a very nice texture. It is great for blankets and scarfs, but there plenty of other projects where you could use this stitch.

Working in rows

Row 1

1. Start by making a chain of multiples of three plus two.

2. Make a double crochet in the fourth loop from your hook.

3. Continue making double crochets until the end of the row.

4. Then chain three.

Row 2

5. Turn your work around. Now you have to make a front post double crochet. So, yarn over.

6. Insert your hook grabbing the post of the double crochet of the previous row like it is shown in the picture.

7. Yarn over.

8. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

9. Yarn over.

10. Pull the yarn through the first two loops. Now you have two loops on your hook.

11. Yarn over.

12. Pull the yarn through both loops. You have just made a front post double crochet.

13. Make a double crochet in the next stitch (in the third double crochet of the previous row).

14. Then make a double crochet in the next stitch.

15. Next make a front post double crochet.

16. Then make two double crochets in the next two stitches.

17. Keep repeating one front post double crochet and two double crochets until the end of the row.

18. In the end of the row, make a double crochet in the turning chain of the previous row.

Row 3

19. Chain three and turn your work around.

20. Make a double crochet in the next stitch.

21. Then make a front post double crochet.

22. And then make another front post double crochet in the next stitch.

23. Then make a double crochet in the next stitch.

24. Then two front post double crochets in the next two stitches.

25. Keep repeating one double crochet and two front post double crochets until the end of the row.

26. Finish the row by making one more double crochet in the turning chain of the previous row.

Row 4

27. For the rest of the pattern repeat row 2 and 3.

28. Done!

Working in rounds

Round 1

1. In the first round make double crochets. The total number of stitches in one round should be a multiple of three.

Round 2

2. Chain three (it counts as a stitch) and yarn over.

3. Then insert your hook from the front grabbing the post of the next stitch like it is shown in the picture. You should bring the post to the front. Then yarn over.

4. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

5. Yarn over.

6. Then pull the yarn through the first two loops.

7. Yarn over again.

8. Pull the yarn through both loops. You have just made a front post double crochet.

9. Then make two double crochets in the next two stitches.

10. Then make a front post double crochet in the next stitch.

11. Keep alternating two double crochets and a front post double crochet until the end of the round. You last stitch should be a double crochet.

12. To join with a slip stitch, insert your hook in the top chain out of the three chains that you made in the beginning of this round. Yarn over and pull the yarn through.

Round 3

13. Chain three.

14. Then make a double crochet in the next stitch.

15. Yarn over.

16. Insert your hook grabbing the post of the next stitch from the back, like it is shown in the picture.

17. Yarn over.

18. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

19. Yarn over and pull the yarn through the first two loops. Now you have two loops on your hook.

20. Yarn over and pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. You have just made a back post double crochet.

21. Then make a back post double crochet in the next stitch. Next make a double crochet in the next stitch. (You should make double crochets in the front post double crochets of the previous round and back post double crochets in the double crochets of the previous round.)

22. Keep alternating two back post double crochets and a double crochet until the end of the round.

23. Join with a slip stitch. Keep repeating round 2 and round 3.
