Waffle stitch crochet basket

I am happy to share a free crochet pattern for a waffle stitch crochet basket. In this pattern I make the waffle stitch in rounds, which is a bit different comparing to making it in rows. If you are not familiar with all stitches that are used in the pattern, you can follow my detailed photo instructions and learn how to make, for example, a front post double crochet or a back post double crochet.

If you are looking for a tapestry crochet basket pattern, you can take a look at my tapestry crochet basket Wave and a tapestry crochet basket Meander.

Good luck!

Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used Strik & Smil “Art silk garn”, 100% viscose, 50 g (~140m), colors: green and gray.
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 2.0.

Abbreviations (US terms)

Notes

The diameter of my basket is 9.0 cm and the height is 5.0 cm (not folded 10.0 cm).

You will be working in rounds. This pattern uses the waffle stitch. Photo instructions below show the main steps how to make this stitch. For the waffle stitch part, the pattern is a repeat of two rounds. Chains that you make in the beginning of each round count as a stitch.

When you finish making the basket, you have to fold in the sides inside the basket. If you are making your basket with relatively thin yarn, it will not be very firm. If you want to make the sides more firm, you can insert stripe of transparent mousse cake film or a few stripes of paper. Insert the film inside the basket and fold the edge of the basket inside hiding the film inside the edge.
