Chestnut stitch

In this step-by-step crochet stitch tutorial I show how to make the chestnut stitch. This crochet stitch tutorial includes detailed photo instructions. For this crochet stitch you should know how to make a half double crochet. The tutorial below shows how to make a double crochet five together stitch and a treble crochet. The chestnut stitch is a repeat of eight rows. The fabric has a beautiful texture.

Crochet stitch tutorial: Chestnut stitch

Row 1

1. Start by chaining a multiple of six plus two. You will start working in the third chain from your hook.

2. So, make a half double crochet in the third chain from your hook.

3. Continue making half double crochets until the end of the row.

Row 2

4. Chain two and turn your work around. Chain two counts as a stitch.

5. Make a half double crochet in the second stitch.

6. Continue making half double crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

7. At the end of the row make the last half double crochet in the turning chain.

Row 3

8. Chain two and turn your work around. Chain two counts as a stitch.

9. Make a half double crochet in the second stitch.

10. Then make another half double crochet in the next stitch.

11. Next you will make a treble crochet in the next stitch. So, yarn over twice.

12. Insert your hook in the next stitch, yarn over and pull the yarn through. Now you have four loops on your hook.

13. Yarn over and pull the yarn through the first two loops. Now you have three loops on your hook.

14. Yarn over and pull the yarn through the first two loops. Now you have two loops on your hook.

15. Yarn over and pull the yarn through both loops. You have just made a treble crochet.

16. Make four more treble crochets in the same stitch.

17. Make five half double crochets in the next five stitches.

18. Make five treble crochets in the next stitch.

19. Then repeat. Make five half double crochets in the next five stitches.

20. Make five treble crochets in the next stitch.

21. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.

22. At the end of the row make two half double crochets in the next two stitches.

23. Then make a half double crochet in the turning chain.

Row 4

24. Chain two and turn your work around. Chain two counts as a stitch.

25. Make a half double crochet in the second stitch.

26. Make another half double crochet in the next stitch.

27. Next you will make a double crochet five together working in the next five stitches. So, yarn over.

28. Insert your hook in the next stitch, yarn over and pull the yarn through. Three loops on your hook.

29. Yarn over and pull the yarn through the first two loops. Two loops on your hook. The first leg is ready.

30. Make the second leg in the next stitch. So, yarn over.

31. Insert your hook in the next stitch, yarn over and pull the yarn through. Four loops on your hook.

32. Yarn over and pull the yarn through the first two loops. Three loops on your hook. The second leg is ready.

33. Make the third leg in the next stitch in the same way. Four loops on your hook.

34. Make the fourth leg in the next stitch. Five loops on your hook.

35. Make the fifth leg in the next stitch. Six loops on your hook.

36. Yarn over and pull the yarn through all loops. You have just made a double crochet five together!

37. The bubble pops up on the other side.

38. Make five half double crochets in the next five stitches.

39. Make another double crochet five together working in the next five stitches.

40. Then repeat. Make five half double crochets in the next five stitches.

41. Make a double crochet five together working in the next five stitches.

42. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.

43. At the end of the row make two half double crochets in the next two stitches.

44. Then make a half double crochet in the turning chain.

Row 5

45. Chain two and turn your work around. Chain two counts as a stitch.

46. Make a half double crochet in the second stitch.

47. It might be hard to see the tops of the stitches, so you can tilt the work towards you to see better.

48. Continue making half double crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

49. At the end of the row make the last half double crochet in the turning chain.

Row 6

50. Chain two and turn your work around. Chain two counts as a stitch.

51. Make a half double crochet in the second stitch.

52. Continue making half double crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

53. At the end of the row make the last half double crochet in the turning chain.

Row 7

54. Chain two and turn your work around.

55. Make a half double crochet in the second stitch.

56. Make five more half double crochets in the next five stitches.

57. Make five treble crochets in the next stitch.

58. Then repeat. Make five half double crochets in the next five stitches.

59. Make five treble crochets in the next stitch.

60. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.

61. At the end of the row make five half double crochets in the next five stitches.

62. Then make another half double crochet in the turning chain.

Row 8

63. Chain two and turn you work around. Chain two counts as a stitch.

64. Make a half double crochet in the second stitch.

65. Make five more half double crochets in the next five stitches.

66. Then make a double crochet five together working in the next five stitches.

67. Then repeat. Make five half double crochets in the next five stitches.

68. Make a double crochet five together working in the next five stitches.

69. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.

70. At the end of the row make five half double crochets in the next five stitches.

71. Then make a half double crochet in the turning chain.

Row 9

72. Chain two and turn your work around. Chain two counts as a stitch.

73. Make a half double crochet in the second stitch.

74. Continue making half double crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

75. At the end of the row make the last half double crochet in the turning chain. For the rest of the pattern repeat rows 2-9.
