Here is the 18th free crochet pattern of my new Christmas Tales collection: a cutlery holder with a heart. It is very quick to make, so you can make a few in no time! You can find other Christmas Tales collection patterns here.
The pattern includes a list of materials, abbreviations, notes, written pattern, color chart and detailed step-by-step photo instructions. This quick crochet project uses the tapestry crochet technique. Even if you haven’t tried this technique before, the photo tutorial will guide you along the way, and you will easily complete the project. - prev: previous

Notes
The size my cutlery holder is 8.0 x 5.8 cm. You will be working in rounds. This pattern uses the tapestry crochet technique (you can find the tutorial here). The photo instructions below show how to make a cutlery holder. This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, just instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial here).
For this pattern you will work in continuous rounds, which means that in the end of a round you don’t join with a slip stitch, but instead continue making modified single crochets in the top of the first stitch of the round. Remember to use a marker showing the beginning of each round. Follow the color chart showing how you should change colors.

Pattern
Start by chaining 49 with red yarn. Join with a sl st to the beginning of the chain. Make sure that the chain is not twisted.
Round 1: ch 1 (does not count as a st), sc in every st in the back of the chain until the end of the round. (In the second round you will start working in the top of the first sc). (48 st in total)
Introduce the white yarn.
Round 2-15: msc in every st of the prev round. (48 st)
Even out the edge and fasten off.
Color chart

How to read the chart
Each square represents a stitch and its color. In each round you have 48 stitches (48 columns in the chart). Rows represent rounds (there are 15 rounds). For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left.

Round 2

1. See photo instructions showing how to start a cutlery holder here.
Round 4

2. The 24th stitch in round 4 should be red, so start the 23rd stitch with the white yarn, but stop when you have two loops on your hook.

3. Complete the 23rd stitch with the red yarn. Now the red yarn is ready to be used.

4. Start making the 24th stitch with the red yarn, but complete it with the white yarn, because the next stitch is white. Keep following the color chart.
Round 8

5. After a while the cutlery holder will look like this.
