Coaster with a Christmas tree
Christmas Tales collection Coasters and table mats

Day 19: Coaster with a Christmas tree

This is the 19th pattern from my Christmas Tales collection: a coaster with a Christmas tree. This coaster is double sided and quite thick. It would be a great addition to your Christmas table decorations.

This post is a part of the Nordic Hook Advent calendar. From December 1 to December 24 I will be posting one free Christmas crochet pattern per day. So stay tuned! 😉

You can find other Christmas Tales collection patterns here.

If you would like to have the whole collection as a book in PDF format right now (and to support me 🙂 ), you can purchase it here.

Good luck!

Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work (mercerized cotton works great in tapestry crochet projects). I used Tencel 100% lyocell, 50 g = 141 m, colors: red (318291), green (318288) and white (318290).
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 2.0 mm.

Notes

The size my coaster is 8.5 x 9.0 cm. You will be working in rounds. For this pattern you should be familiar with the tapestry crochet (you can find the tutorial here). Photo instructions below show the main steps how to make a coaster. This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, just instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial here).

For this pattern you will work in continuous rounds, which means that in the end of a round you don’t join with a slip stitch, but instead continue making modified single crochets in the top of the first stitch of the round. Remember to use a marker showing the beginning of each round. Follow the color chart showing how you should change colors.

Pattern

Start by chaining 28 with red yarn.

Round 1: To make the first round, you will work down the chain, then turn and work in the other side of the chain. Make sc in every st of the chain starting from the second chain from your hook. Turn. 1 sc in the end of the chain, make sc in every st (starting with the one you have just worked into; now that st has 3 sc in total) until you come back to the beginning of the chain. 1 sc in the end of the chain. In total you should have 56 st. Don’t join with a sl st, instead continue with the next round.

Introduce the white yarn.

Round 2-3: msc in every st of the prev round. (56 st)

Cut the red yarn, introduce the green yarn.

Round 4-21: msc in every st of the prev round. (56 st)

Cut the green yarn and introduce the red yarn.

Round 22-24: msc in every st of the prev round. (56 st)

Make 4 sl st to even out the edge, fasten off and close the coaster.

Color chart

Color chart: Coaster with Christmas tree. Free pattern by Nordic Hook.

How to read the chart

Each square represents a stitch and its color. In each round you have 56 stitches (56 columns in the chart). Rows represent rounds (there are 24 rounds). For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left.

You can find a more detailed tutorial explaining how to read a color chart and when and how to change yarn color here.

Photo instructions for the coaster with a Christmas tree

Round 2

1. See general photo instructions showing how to start a coaster here. The second stitch in round 2 is white, therefore don’t complete the first stitch in round 2, stop when you have 2 loops on your hook. Take the white yarn and yarn over.

2. Pull the yarn through. Now the white yarn is ready to be used.

3. Start making the second stitch in round 2 with the white yarn, but complete it with the red yarn, because the next stitch should be red.

4. Continue to follow the color chart.

Round 4

5. Start making the first stitch in round 4, but stop when you have two loops on your hook. Then take the green yarn and place it like it is shown in the picture. Put the red yarn aside and cut it (leave an end to weave in).

6. Yarn under the white yarn.

7. Pull the yarn through. Now the green yarn is secured.

Round 5

8. The 42nd stitch in round 5 should be green. So, complete the 41st stitch with the green yarn.

9. Then start making the 42nd stitch with the green yarn, but complete it with the white yarn, because the next stitch should be white again.

Round 19

10. After a while the coaster will look like this.

Round 21

11. Start making the last stitch in round 21, but stop when you have two loops on your hook. Then put the green yarn aside and cut it. Take the red yarn and place it like it is shown in the picture, yarn under the white yarn and pull it through. Now the red yarn is secured.

Round 22

12. The fourth stitch in round 22 should be red, therefore, complete the third stitch in round 22 with the red yarn. Then continue to follow the color chart.

Finishing up

13. Complete the coaster by evening out the edge (see a tutorial here) and closing it up with slip stitches (see a tutorial here).
