Here is a free crochet pattern for an easy cup cozy. I absolutely love taking a warm drink with me on walks, and this cup cozy is a nice touch. It is a beginner-friendly crochet pattern that takes no time to make. The beauty of working with bulky yarn, which I use for my cozy, is that you can see your progress instantly. Also, the stitches are quite big and, in my opinion, give a modern look to the cup cozy.
The pattern is simple and requires you to know only a center single crochet stitch (also known as a waistcoat or a knit stitch). If you are not familiar with this stitch, you can take a look at my photo tutorial here. Because of this stitch and the use of bulky yarn, your cup cozy will be rather thick.
The pattern includes a list of materials, abbreviations, notes, and a written pattern.

Materials
- Yarn: I use bulky Järbo Molly 100% acrylic yarn 50 g (antracit and eggshell white). However, any bulky yarn will work.
- Hook: I use a 6.0 mm hook. If you are using a different yarn, choose the hook size that is recommended on your yarn label.
Abbreviations (US terms)
- sl st: slip stitch
- st: stitch
- ch: chain
- sc: single crochet
- csc: center single crochet (a.k.a waistcoat or knit stitch)
- prev: previous
Notes
The diameter of my cup is 8 cm and the height of the cozy is 7 cm. You will be working in rounds. Start by chaining and continue until you can wrap your cup around with a chain. It should be quite tight. This pattern works for any number of chains. To adjust the height of your cozy, keep repeating rows in white yarn until you almost reach the desired height, then change the yarn to gray and make one more row.
The center single crochet is made similarly to a single crochet, the only difference is where you insert your hook: for this stitch instead of working into the top of the stitch you insert your hook right in the middle of the post (in the center of ‘v’, like it is shown in the picture). This stitch can come up very tight and it might be hard to insert your hook in the center of the stitches. In this case, try to size up your hook by one number and keep the tension a bit more loose. If you are not sure how to make a center single crochet, you can take a look at the photo tutorial here.

Pattern
Start by chaining any number of chains with gray yarn until you reach the desired length (you can wrap the chain around your cup). For my cozy I chained 24. Then join the end of the chain to the beginning with a sl st.
Round 1: ch 1. Make a sc in every stitch of the chain. Join with a sl st to close the round.
Round 2: change to white yarn and ch 1. Csc in every st of the prev round, join with a sl st.
Round 3-8: repeat round 2.
Round 9: change to gray yarn and ch 1. Csc in every st of the prev round, join with a sl st. Fasten off.
Enjoy your cup cozy!
