How to introduce yarn in tapestry crochet

This step-by-step crochet tutorial explains how to introduce yarn in tapestry crochet.

In tapestry crochet you work with more than one yarn at the same time: one yarn is the main working yarn and the others are carried along. In most of the Nordic Hook’s patterns items are started with one main yarn and then the second yarn is introduced at a later stage.

The photo instructions below show the most common way to introduce the second yarn. You would work in the same way if you wanted to introduce multiple yarns: just put them all together with the second yarn and follow the steps.

When the first stitch in the second round is the same color

1. If you are introducing the second yarn in round 2, start making the first stitch in round 2, but don’t finish it, stop when you have two loops on your hook.

2. Then take your second yarn and place it like it is shown in the picture: under your hook and in front of the main yarn.

3. Then continue making a modified single crochet: yarn under the main yarn.

4. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. Notice that the second yarn is wrapped around with the main yarn and secured.

When the first stitch in the second round is in a different color

1. If the first stitch in the second round should be in a different color, start making the last stitch in round 1 with the main yarn, but stop when you have two loops on your hook. Then take your second color yarn and yarn over.

2. Pull the second color yarn through both loops on your hook. Now this yarn is ready to be used.

3. Then work as usual: insert your hook in the top of the first single crochet of the first round grabbing just the back loop. The green yarn should be in front of your hook.

4. Yarn over the white yarn.

5. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook. Then yarn under.

6. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook.
