Tapestry crochet bag “Christmas tree”

Here is a free crochet pattern for a tapestry crochet bag with a string. It is a quick Christmas crochet project for those who like tapestry crochet. If you haven’t tried this technique before, you can take a look at my tutorial here. This tapestry crochet bag with a Christmas tree could be a great present. Especially, if you will put some sweets inside 🙂

In this pattern I use three colors: white, linen and green. However, I am carrying along only one yarn. The reason for this is that you will need the linen yarn (or brown) only for the trunk of the Christmas tree, i.e. in rounds 10 and 11. After that, just change the linen yarn to the green yarn and work with only two colors at the same time.

Good luck!

Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used Järbo 8/4 100% Cotton “Mercerized & Gassed” 50 g (offwhite, linen and frosty green).
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 2.0.

Notes

The diameter of my bag is 6.5 cm, the height is 15.0 cm. You will be working in rounds. For this pattern you should be familiar with the tapestry crochet (you can find the tutorial here), Photo instructions below show the main steps how to make a bag and a string. This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, just instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial here). To make a modified single crochet increase you need to make two modified single crochets in the same stitch. Except the bottom part (rounds 1-7) and the two rounds where you make holes for a string (rounds 41-42), every round is made in the same way: chain one, make 55 modified single crochets, join with a slip stitch. Follow the color chart showing how you should change colors.

Making the bag

Start by making a magic (adjustable) ring with the white yarn. You will not need your linen or green yarn until round 9.

Round 1: 8 sc in the magic ring, join with a sl st. (8 st in total)

Round 2: ch 1, 1 msc in the first st, msc inc in every following st, join with a sl st. (16 st)

Round 3: ch 1, 1 msc in the first st, 1 msc in the next st; *msc inc, 1 msc in the next st*, rep ** 7 times, join with a sl st. (24 st)

Round 4: ch 1; *msc inc, 2 msc*, rep ** 7 times, msc inc, 1 msc, join with a sl st. (32 st)

Round 5: ch 1, msc; *msc inc, 3 msc*, rep ** 7 times, msc inc, msc, join with a sl st. (40 st)

Round 6: ch 1; *msc inc, 4 msc*, rep ** 7 times, msc inc, 3 msc, join with a sl st. (48 st)

Round 7: ch 1, 3 msc; *msc inc, 5 msc*, rep ** 7 times, msc inc, msc, join with a sl st. (56 st)

The bottom of the bag is finished.

Round 8: ch 1, msc in every st of the prev round. Join with a sl st. (56 st)

Add the linen yarn (see photo instructions).

Round 9-12: ch 1, msc in every st of the prev round. Join with a sl st. (56 st)

Cut the linen yarn and add the green yarn.

Round 13-40: ch 1, msc in every st of the prev round. Join with a sl st. (56 st)

Making the holes for the string:

Round 41: ch 1, *ch 2, skip 2 st of the prev round, 2 msc*, rep ** 13 times, ch 2, skip 2 st of the prev round, 1 msc, join with a sl st. (56 st)

Round 42: ch 1, *2 msc in the ch2 space of the prev round (make sure to grab the loose yarn hanging in the ch2 space in the prev round too), 2 msc*, rep ** 13 times, 2 msc in the ch2 space of the prev round, 1 msc, join with a sl st. (56 st)

Round 43-46: ch 1, msc in every st of the prev round. Join with a sl st. (56 st)

Fasten off.

Making the string

Start by chaining with the green yarn. The length of the chain should be around 30-32 cm long. Make a row of slip stitches in the third loop of the chain as it is shown in photo instructions below. When you reach the end of the row, fasten off. You are ready to weave in the string into your bag.

Color chart

Color chart
Color chart

How to read the chart

Each square represents a stitch and its color. In each round you have 56 stitches (56 columns in the chart). Rows represent rounds. The first 7 rounds are the bottom of the bag and the color chart starts from round 8. For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left. The chain that you make in the beginning of each round counts a stitch.

In the scheme, red squares indicate where you should make holes for the string. When you chain 2 for a hole, you cannot hide the yarn you are not working with: it will be ‘hanging’ in the hole. Don’t worry, when you will make round 42, you will grab both yarns you need to hide: the one in round 41 and the one in round 42. See photo instructions.

Photo instructions

Making the bag

Round 1

1. Start with a magic ring. Then make 8 sc and join with a sl st. Chain 1.

Round 2

2. Insert your hook in the next st grabbing just the back loop.

3. Yarn over pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

4. Next, instead of yarning over like you would usually do, yarn under.

5. Then pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. You have just made an msc. Next you have to make a msc inc, which means that you have to make 2 msc in the next st. Continue until the end of the round.

Round 3

6. Chain 1.

7. Then make a msc in the very first st. (The chain that you made in the beginning and this msc counts as an increase.)

8. Make a msc in the next st. Continue following the pattern.

Round 9

9. In round 9 you need to introduce the linen yarn. So, put the linen yarn behind your hook and in front of the white yarn.

10. Then chain one. Notice that the linen yarn is wrapped and secured.

11. Next insert your hook in the next st grabbing just the back loop. The linen yarn should be in front of your hook.

12. Yarn over the white yarn and pull it through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

13. Then yarn under the white yarn.

14. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. Notice that the linen yarn is wrapped and hidden. Continue until the end of the round.

Round 10

15. In round 10 you need to change color because the 27th st is linen. So, chain 1, make 24 full msc, start making your 25th msc with the white yarn.

16. Then put your linen yarn up and yarn it under.

17. Pull it through both loops on your hook. Now you can make next stitches with your linen yarn.

18. So, make 2 full msc with your linen yarn and start the third msc.

19. Finish this third msc with the white yarn. Continue following the color chart.

Round 14

20. In round 14, the 35th st should be green. So, start making the 34th st with the white yarn.

21. Finish it with the green yarn.

22. Then start making the 35th st with the green yarn.

23. Since the next st should be white again, finish it with the white yarn.

Round 41

24. Chain 3.

25. Skip two next stitches and make 2 msc in the next two stitches. Your green yarn will be “hanging” in the hole.

26. Then chain two, skip two stitches and make 2 msc in the next 2 stitches. Continue until the end of the round.

Round 42

27. Chain one.

28. Next insert your hook in the ch2 space grabbing both green yarns like it shown in the picture.

29. Yarn over the white yarn and pull it through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

30. Yarn under and pull the yarn through both loops on your hook.

31. Make the second msc in the ch2 space. Then make two msc in the next two stitches. Continue following the pattern.

Finished tapestry crochet bag

32. Done!

Making the string

1. Start with a chain.

2. Now you will be working in the third loop of your chain which is behind ‘v’.

3. Insert your hook in the third loop of the chain and yarn over.

4. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

5. Pull the first loop through the other one. Now you have one loop on hour hook. You have just made your first slip stitch.

6. In the photo you can see that after several stitches it starts looking like two chains stuck together. Continue making slip stitches in the third loop of the chain until the end of the row. Fasten off. Done!
