Tapestry crochet keychain Allison

Here is a free crochet pattern for the tapestry crochet keychain Allison. It is easy to make and you can adjust the length of the keychain. My keychain is quite long and you can wear it on your neck.

This quick crochet project uses tapestry crochet technique. If you haven’t tried tapestry crochet before, you can take a look at my tutorial here.

You can find my other free patterns here. I also have a free pattern for two smaller tapestry crochet keychains. You can find it here.

Good luck!

Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used Madame Tricot Paris Almina 8/4 mercerized cotton 100% 50 g = 169 m. Colors: pink and black.
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used a 2.0 mm hook.
  • Metal part for a keychain

Notes

The size of my keychains is 3.0 x 73.0 cm (when not folded in two). The pattern explains how to adjust the size of the keychain.

For this pattern you should be familiar with the tapestry crochet (you can find the tutorial here). This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, just instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial here).

You will work in continuous rounds, which means that in the end of a round you don’t join with a slip stitch, but instead continue making modified single crochets in the top of the first stitch of the round. Remember to use a marker showing the beginning of each round. Follow the color chart showing how you should change colors.

Photo instructions below show how to make the keychain. You can adjust the length of your chain by chaining more or less in the beginning, but have in mind that it should be a multiple of four. The end of each round will have a little step due to working in continuous rounds. I recommend folding the keychain and keeping the metal part of the keychain where this little step is, then it will be less noticeable.

Pattern

Start by chaining 248 with black yarn (or any multiple of 4). Put the metal end of a keychain on the chain. You will start working in the first chain. Make sure that the chain is not twisted.

Introduce the second color (pink) yarn.

Round 1: msc in every st until the end of the round.

Round 2-9: repeat round 1.

Fasten off.

Color chart

How to read the chart

Above you can see a color pattern for the keychain. Each square represents a stitch and its color. In each round you have 248 stitches. The chart above shows only a small part of the pattern, (columns 1-24 in the chart). Columns 25-248 are made in the same way: the color pattern repeats every 4 columns (1-4). Rows represent rounds. For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left.

Round 1

1. Start by chaining 248 chains with black yarn.

2. Put the metal part of the keychain and insert your hook in the first chain. Make sure that the chain is not twisted.

3. Yarn over.

4. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

5. Put the second color yarn (pink) in front of the first color yarn (black) and behind your hook.

6. Yarn under the black yarn.

7. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. Notice how the pink yarn is wrapped around with the black yarn. You have just made a modified single crochet!

8. Insert your hook in the next stitch.

9. Yarn over.

10. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

11. Yarn under and pull the yarn through.

12. Continue making modified single crochets with the black yarn until the end of the round. Complete the last stitch of the round with the black yarn, because the first stitch in round 2 is also black.

Round 2

13. So, make the first stitch in round 2 in the top of the modified single crochet of the previous round with black yarn.

14. Start making the second stitch, but stop when you have two loops on your hook. The next stitch is pink, so you have to change yarn color.

15. Put the pink yarn up.

16. Yarn under the pink yarn.

17. Pull the yarn through. Now your pink yarn is ready to use.

18. Make the next stitch with pink yarn.

19. Then start making the next stitch with pink yarn, but complete it with black yarn, because the next stitch is black.

20. Make one full modified single crochet with black yarn, then start making the next one, but complete it with pink yarn, because you have to change color again.

21. Continue working in the same way following the color chart until the end of the pattern.

22. After a few rounds your work will start looking like this. At the end of the round 9, cut both yarns and fasten off.
