Materials

  • Yarn: I use Madame Tricot Paris Almina 8/4 mercerized cotton 100% 50 g = 169 m. Colors: pink, white and black. However, any thin cotton yarn will work.
  • Hook: I use a 2.0 mm hook. If you are using a different yarn, choose the hook size that is recommended on your yarn label.
  • Metal part for a keychain

Abbreviations (US terms)

Notes

The size of my keychains is 1.3 x 30.0 cm (when not folded in two). The pattern explains how to adjust the size of the keychain.

This pattern uses the tapestry crochet technique (you can find the tutorial here). It uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, just instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial here).

You will work in continuous rounds, which means that in the end of a round you don’t join with a slip stitch, but instead continue making modified single crochets in the top of the first stitch of the round. Remember to use a marker showing the beginning of each round. Follow the color chart showing how you should change colors.

Photo instructions below show how to make both keychains: the beginning for both keychains is made in the same way, the only difference is the color pattern. The written pattern for both keychains is the same. You can adjust the length of your chain by chaining more or less in the beginning, but have in mind that it should be a multiple of four. The end of each round will have a little step due to working in continuous rounds. I recommend folding the keychain and keeping the metal part of the keychain where this little step is, then it will be less noticeable.

Pattern

Start by chaining 100 with white yarn (or any multiple of 4). Put the metal end of a keychain on the chain. You will start working in the first chain. Make sure that the chain is not twisted.

Introduce the second color yarn.

Round 1: msc in every st until the end of the round.

Round 2-3: repeat round 1.

Fasten off.

Color charts

How to read the charts

Above you can see two color patterns for two keychains. Each square represents a stitch and its color. In each round you have 100 stitches. The charts above show only one fifth of the pattern, (columns 1-20 in the chart). Columns 21-100 are made in the same way: the color pattern repeats every 4 columns (1-4). Rows represent rounds. For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left.

Keychain No. 1

Round 1

1. Start by chaining 100 chains with white yarn.

2. Put the metal part of the keychain and insert your hook in the first chain. Make sure that the chain is not twisted.

3. Yarn over.

4. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

5. Put the second color yarn (pink) in front of the first color yarn (white) and behind your hook.

6. Yarn under the white yarn.

7. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. Notice how the pink yarn is wrapped around with the white yarn. You have just made a modified single crochet!

8. Insert your hook in the next stitch.

9. Yarn over.

10. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook. The next stitch in round 1 is pink, so you have to change yarn color now.

11. Put the pink yarn up.

12. Yarn under the pink yarn.

13. Pull the yarn through. Now the pink yarn is ready to use.

14. Make the third stitch of this round with pink yarn.

15. Then start making the fourth stitch, but stop when you have two loops on your hook. You have to change yarn color, because the next stitch should be white.

16. So, complete the fourth stitch with white yarn.

17. Then make one full modified single crochet with white yarn, start making the second one, but complete it with pink yarn, as the next stitch should be pink.

18. Continue working in the same way following the color chart until the end of the row. Complete the last stitch of the round with pink yarn, because the first stitch in round 2 is pink.

Round 2

19. So, start making in the first stitch in round 2 in the top of the modified single crochet of the previous round with pink yarn and complete it with white yarn.

20. Then make one full modified single crochet with white yarn, start making the second one, but complete it with pink yarn.

21. Continue working in the same way following the color chart until the end of the pattern.

Round 3

22. When you are done with round 3, you can notice that the keychain has a little step where the round ends. If you fold the keychain where this step is, it is not very noticeable.

Keychain No. 2

Round 1

1. Start by chaining 100 with white yarn and repeat steps 2-13 from Keychain No. 1 photo instructions. The third stitch in round 1 is black, so complete the second stitch with black yarn.

2. Start making the next stitch with black yarn, but stop when you have two loops on your hook. The fourth stitch is white, so you have to change yarn color.

3. Complete the third stitch with white yarn.

4. Then make two full modified single crochets with white yarn, start making the third one, but complete it with black yarn, because the next stitch is black.

5. Then start making the next stitch with black yarn, but complete it with white yarn because the next stitch is white.

6. Continue working in the same way following the color chart until the end of the round. Complete the last stitch of this round with white yarn, because the first stitch in round 2 is white.

Round 2

7. Continue following the color chart until the end of the pattern.
