In this free step-by-step crochet tutorial I show how to make the sultan crochet stitch. This stitch is a lacy crochet stitch. The fabric turns out light and breathable. It works great for shawls and wraps, lightweight scarves, lacy crochet summer tops and tanks, lightweight blankets and other summer crochet projects. This stitch can also be used in decorative crochet projects for the home.
This crochet stitch tutorial includes detailed photo instructions. The sultan crochet stitch is a four-row repeat. For this stitch you should know how to make double crochet. This stitch is very easy to make and suitable for beginners.

Materials and tools
Yarn: For this tutorial I use Hjertegarn DIAMOND mercerized cotton 100% 8/4 50g, color: 3304 (lilac). However, you can use your favorite yarn depending on the crochet project.
Hook: I use a 2.0 mm hook. If you are using a different yarn, choose the hook size that is recommended on your yarn label.

Row 1

1. Start by chaining multiples of four plus one. You will start working in the sixth chain from your hook.

2. So, make a double crochet in the sixth chain from your hook.

3. Chain two.

4. Make another double crochet in the same stitch where you have just worked in.

5. Then skip three stitches and make a double crochet.

6. Chain two.

7. Make another double crochet in the same stitch.

8. Skip three stitches, make a double crochet in the next stitch, chain two and make the second double crochet in the same stitch.

9. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row until you have three stitches left.

10. Then skip two stitches and make a double crochet in the last stitch.

11. Chain three.
Row 2

12. Turn your work around. You will start working in the chain two space of the previous row.

13. So, make four double crochets in the chain two space of the previous row.

14. Then make four double crochets in the next chain two space.

15. Continue making four double crochets in each chain two space until the end of the row.

16. At the end of the row make a double crochet in the turning chain.

17. Chain four.
Row 3

18. Turn your work around. You will start working in the space between the double crochet and four double crochets of the previous row.

19. So, make a double crochet in the space between the double crochet and four double crochets.

20. Then skip four stitches and make a double crochet in the space between four double crochets.

21. Chain two.

22. Make the second double crochet in the same space where you have just worked in.

23. In the next space between four double crochets make a double crochet, chain two and make another double crochet.

24. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.

25. At the end of the row make a double crochet in the turning chain space.

26. Chain one.

27. Make another double crochet in the same space.

28. Chain three.
Row 4

29. Turn your work around. You will start working in the chain one space of the previous row.

30. So, make two double crochets in the chain one space.

31. Then make four double crochets in the chain two space of the previous row.

32. Make four double crochets in the next chain two space.

33. Continue making four double crochets in each chain two space until the end of the row.

34. At the end of the row make three double crochets in the turning chain space.

35. Chain three.
Row 5

36. Turn your work around.

37. Make a double crochet in the space between three and four double crochets of the previous row.

38. Chain two.

39. Make another double crochet in the same space.

40. In the next space between four double crochets make a double crochet, chain two and make another double crochet.

41. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.

42. At the end of the row make a double crochet in the turning chain. For the rest of the pattern repeat rows 2-5.
