The wattle stitch

In this step-by-step crochet tutorial I show how to make the wattle crochet stitch. This stitch is really simple and beginner friendly because you only need to know how to chain and make single and double crochets. It is a repeat of one row and it looks the same on both sides.

For this tutorial I use Hjertegarn DIAMOND mercerized cotton 100% 8/4 50g yarn, color: 3803 (light lilac), and a 2.0 mm hook.

Photo instructions for the wattle crochet stitch

Row 1

1. Start by chaining a multiple of three.

2. In the second chain from your hook make a single crochet.

3. In the next stitch you will make a V stitch consisting of one single crochet, one chain and one double crochet. So, make a single crochet in the next stitch.

4. Then chain one.

5. Make a double crochet in the same stitch where you have just worked in. Next you will skip two stitches and make another V stitch.

6. So, skip two stitches and make a single crochet.

7. Chain one.

8. Then make a double crochet in the same stitch.

9. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row: skip two stitches and then in the next stitch make a V stitch.

10. In the end of the row, skip two stitches and make a single crochet in the last stitch.

11. Chain one.

Row 2

12. Turn your work around. Chain one does not count as stitch, so you will start working in the very first stitch.

13. So, make a single crochet in the first stitch. Next you will make a V stitch in the chain one space of the previous row (in the center of the V stitch in the previous row).

14. So, make a single crochet in the chain one space.

15. Chain one.

16. Then make a double crochet in the same chain one space.

17. Make another V stitch in the next chain one space.

18. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row: make a V stitch in every chain one space.

19. At the end of the row make a single crochet in the last stitch. For the rest of the pattern repeat row 2.
