Front post and back post double crochet (fpdc and bpdc)

Here it is shown how to make a front post double crochet (fpdc) and a back post double crochet (bpdc). It is similar to a simple double crochet (dc), the only difference is where you insert your hook.

For a front post double crochet you will bring the post in the previous row forward, while for a back post double crochet you will bring the post in the previous row backward. I use front post double crochet for my small alpine stitch bag.

1. For this tutorial, start with a chain. Then chain three and make the first double crochet in the fourth loop from your hook and continue making double crochets until the end of the row. This is your usual row of double crochets. Chain two.

2. Turn around your work and yarn over.

3. Insert your hook behind the second double crochet post of the previous row bringing it to the front (like it is shown in the picture).

4. Now you will make a double crochet as usually: first, yarn over.

5. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

6. Yarn over.

7. Pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook. Now you have two loops on your hook.

8. Yarn over.

9. Pull the yarn through both loops. You have just made a front post double crochet.

10. Now make a front post double crochet in the next stitch (third double crochet post of the previous row).

11. Continue until the end of the row.

12. Chain two. Turn your work around and yarn over.

13. Now you will be making a back post double crochet. Insert your hook bringing the second front post double crochet of the previous row to the back (like it is shown in the picture).

14. Finish making a double crochet as usually.

15. Continue till the end of the row. You can see that on the ‘bad’ side the chains are brought forward.

16. Make as many rows as you need. This is how it looks on the ‘good side’ when you alternate front post and back post double crochets. Done!
