Moss stitch table mat

Here is a free crochet pattern for an easy table mat (or placemat). Moss stitch table mat is a beginner-friendly project. Even though the moss stitch (also called the linen or granite stitch) looks pretty simple, you can create a very interesting design by combining a couple of colors. It is dense, which means it is perfect for table mats, coasters, dishcloths or potholders.

I like how the moss stitch table mat turned out, so I am thinking of making a matching coaster as well. I hope you like it too and use the free pattern below to make your own mats.

The pattern includes a list of materials, abbreviations, notes, a written pattern, and a color scheme. You can find my other free crochet patterns for coasters and placemats here and more free crochet projects here.

Materials

  • Yarn: I use two cakes (one gray, one white) of 50 g (120 m) Somerset Linen silk yarn from a local store. However, any thin cotton yarn will work.
  • Hook: I use a 2.5 mm hook. If you are using a different yarn, choose the hook size that is recommended on your yarn label.

Abbreviations (US terms)

Notes

You will be working in rows. The size of my table mat is 25×33 cm, but if you want you can make it a bit bigger. You can adjust the length by choosing the length of your chain. I chained 90, so to that you could add, e.g. 20. To increase the height you have at least two options: 1) to increase the number of rows for the first and for the last gray stripe; 2) instead of finishing with row 70, continue by repeating rows 1-16 once again. If you are not familiar with the moss stitch, you can check the tutorial here. How to change the yarn color for the next row is shown in my easy three color pillow post: photo instructions, changing yarn color, steps 1a – 3a.

Pattern

Take your gray yarn and start with any even number of chains. I chained 90.

Row 1: sc in the fourth ch from your hook, *ch 1, skip one ch and sc in the following ch*; rep * * until the end of the row.

Row 2: ch 2, sc in the ch space of the prev row, *ch 1, skip one st, sc in the ch space of the prev row*, rep * * until the end of the row. Your last sc should be in the turning ch of the prev row.

For the rest of the project you will be repeating row 2. The color scheme is described below.

Row 3-6: gray.

Row 7-8: white.

Row 9-10: gray.

Row 11-12: white.

Row 13-14: gray.

Row 15-16: white.

Row 17-70: rep rows 1-16.
